This is another sbs to compliment the Dubbing Techniques  article. Here I have utilised three different ways you can use a split thread dubbing loop. This isn?t the way I normally tie the Hare's Ear Nymph, the purpose of this sbs is to show you some of the different effects possible by varying the techniques used.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers.

HOOK ? Niche N530 #14
THREAD ? Orange UTC70
TAIL ? Hare?s Mask Guard Hairs.
BODY ? Light Hare?s Mask Blend
THORAX COVER ? Canada Goose
THORAX ? Dark Hare?s mask Blend
HACKLE ? Hare?s Mask Guard Hairs.

STEP 1
Attach the thread and wrap to the mid point.

STEP 2
Select a bunch of guard hairs, and after cleaning out the underfur, tie them in to form the tail.

STEP 3
Split the thread and apply the light hare?s mask blend to one leg of the loop, using the twist dubbing method,

Then spin the bobbin to form  a dubbing rope. By combining the twist dubbing and split thread loop I am now left with a slim, tight and virtually indestructible dubbing rope.

Finally, wrap the rope to form the body.

STEP 4
Fold and tie in the thorax cover.

STEP 5
Split the thread again. But this time insert a dubbing noodle of slightly darker hare?s mask blend.

Then spin it to form the dubbing rope. As you can see the effect is quite different to the techniques used in the body, this time the rope is much spikier.

Then wrap to form the thorax.

STEP 6
Grab a few guard hairs in a paper clip as shown.

Then split the thread again and insert the hairs in the loop.

Adjust them for length, then carefully trim the butts close to the loop.

Spin the bobbin to form what, this time, will be a hair hackle.

Finally, wrap the hair hackle, with each turn stroke the fibres back with your fingers.

You will be left with a hair hackle as shown here.

STEP 7
Pull the thorax cover over and tie off at the head, splitting the hair hackle in the process.

STEP 8
Trim the butts, form a neat head, whipfinish and varnish to complete the fly. Here you can easily see the different effects achieved by varying the methods employed utilising just one technique.
