Dr Bozidar Voljc from Slovenia brought us this style of sedge. More recently superseded by the use of scotch tape which although much quicker to make is, in my opinion, not as durable as the original. There is also a version by Oliver Edwards where he uses deer hair spun in a loop for the body, but as with many of his patterns, good as they are, I think it is an over complication.
This fly is very quick to tie and is very durable. The only downside is the preparation of the wings, but since several dozen can be done at a time, it is only a minor encumbrance.
As with most generic patterns simply alter the colours to suit.
The wings as you will see a little later can be made from almost any feather, typically game bird or hen back feathers.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers.

HOOK - Dry Fly #10
THREAD ? Black 8/0
BODY ? Palmered Red Game Hackle
WING ? Voljc Style Wing
HEAD HACKLE ? Same as Body Hackle.

To prepare the wings take a pair of your good ladies tights and stretch them over an embroidery frame. Coat with cellulose dope, this stiffens the nylon up a bit and stops it contracting when you release the tights from the frame.
Moisten your chosen feather slightly to shape them. Then coat the back of the feather with a clear PVC adhesive and stick them in rows onto the nylon. Allow to dry and you will be left with something like this.

Now, simply cut a feather out with scissors.

Fold it in half, with the nylon mesh on the inside and trim to size and shape. You?re now ready to start tying.

STEP 1
Attach the thread and wrap to the hook bend, then tie in the hackle by its tip. Return the thread to the shoulder, remembering to leave enough room for the wing and head hackle.

STEP 2
Palmer the hackle and tie off.

STEP 3
Dab the tips of the hackle with glue.

This will allow little pockets of air to form when you tie the wing in.

STEP 4
Tie in the head hackle.

Wrap and tie off.

STEP 5
Form a neat head, whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly.
