One of two submissions to a swap on another board.
A simple variation of Bob Wyatt?s D.H.E and like the Quill John, such an obvious variation that I?m sure it?s been done before. I?ve given it a stripped hackle quill body and added a touch of red dubbing behind the wing. Should do the business??. I hope!

Instructions assume right-handed tyers.

HOOK ? Kamasan B100
THREAD ? Black 8/0
BODY ? Stripped Cree Quill (two coats of varnish)
THORAX ? Orange Hare?s Ear Blend
WING ? Coastal Deer Hair
HEAD ? Hare's Ear

STEP 1
Attach the thread and lay a base down the body and back to the point shown.

STEP 2
Prepare a small bunch of hair by cleaning out the underfur and aligning the tips, then tie it in with the tips projecting over the eye and approximately the same length as the body.

Then trim the butts and cover with thread.

Then take the thread down the body, well round the bend.

STEP 3
Tie in the stripped hackle stem, taking the thread back up the body.

Then wrap the hackle stem to form the body and tie off.

STEP 4
Whipfinish at this point and detach the thread. Then give the body two or three coats of varnish, allowing the varnish to dry between coats. It pays to tie several flies to this stage and do all the varnishing at the same time.

Once the varnish is dry reattach the thread.

STEP 5
Apply a pinch of dubbing and wrap to fill the gap between the end of the body and the base of the wing.

STEP 6
Apply a pinch of dubbing and wrap to form the head.

STEP 7
Whipfinish, detach the thread and varnish for the completed fly.

If you do several at a time adding the thorax and head is a quick process and you can knock out several flies in a short space of time.
