Title: Alt bar self catering or nearby?
Post by: Tim on March 19, 2011, 09:59:41 AM
Looking for self catering accomodation for two dads and two boys in the Ledmore/ Inchnadamph area for a week in early June. Does anyone know if the Alt is letting 'chalets' or have alternative recommendations?

Thanks

Tim

How about this one. It is at the bottom of two paths up into the Inchnadamph hill lochs and just across the road from the top of Loch Assynt and is also central for getting around the area. You also have use of the hostel which is close by and the hotel is across the burn :) I haven't stayed here but have walked past them a few times and they look the part.

Looking down on the hostel on the right with the cottages, the hotel on the left and Loch Assynt at the back.

I've used these in the past

Pretty good and the views are outstanding. Within walking distance of the pub too. The price has gone up a lot   since I was last there  though and the owner at the time,  Andre, was a it offhand to be frank.

There used to be some properties at Elphin for rent - The old School house and Cama cottage. It might be worth a search to see if they are still available. Also there wasa bunkhouse there owned by a guy called Tom Strang. I've not stayed in these places for years so don't know the current situation.

I've stayed in the cottages at Inchnadamph hostel and they are superb, also the hostel has a wee shop, very limited supplies though. Would recommend this. There is at least one self catering in Elphin that I know of. Hope this helps.

Thanks for these. We seem to be going down the campervan/ motorhome route now. A wet week will be interesting but if the weather is ok this will give us a bit more flexibility. The boys love the idea anyway!

There are plenty of hill lochs we want to revisit...some of them in camel breeder country...and so many new places to explore.

Will report back.

All power to your elbow!. Good on you for getting these  lads out. It's the greatest gift you can give them.

I stayed here a few years ago . It was/is a fantastic facility. I fished the nearby Gillaroo Loch in the hills above it. I recommend the Loch and the hostel highly............

Does anyone know if the Alt Bar is still in business? I heard it was up for sale. Their website isn't working. Enjoyed a few pints and a bit of fishing there many years ago.

It was open last year, I think it's a couple from London that run it now. Still has a roaring fire going all the time so nice and warm and the food, if expensive, is excellent. I know the Inchnadamph Hotel bar is also open to non-residents but has some bloody weird opening hours, always freezing as well. Hope this helps.

Thanks, John, good to hear it's still going. Far too many fishing hotels going under these days.

The Alt Bar is open

I think the confusion arises because the 'Motel' chalets next door are for sale - although I heard when I was up last September that a sale had gone through.

My preparations are underway for June again - going up via Garvault in Helmsdale - wild troot overdose - ya beauty
