A post by Shad / Colin, gave me an idea.

Would it be feasible for forum members to put up a title of a book they wouldn't mind sharing / swapping with other forumites and then folk could pass on books they think are worth reading that others maybe wouldn't go out and buy otherwise ? I dare say it wouldn't have to be restricted to just fishing books as I have a few climbing books I wouldn't mind sharing.

Kind of like a Wild Fishing community library.

I think this might work here because most folk are known to or by someone whereas on other forums the system could get abused by the usual suspects.

What do others think or is this not possible due to copyright laws ?

don, i love the idea: but i love my books too much! no offence to anyone on the forum, but i've lent so many books over the years that either haven't been returned or have come back damaged, i just couldn't. my wife, on the other hand, would happily give away the lot... (mind you, that goes for the fishing tackle, too )

just as a matter of interest, there's always kindle. how does swapping (euphemism for "giving") kindle files suit? and how does the land lie wrt legality of this? i'm not a great "kindler" (see comment above), but i do have tales of fishes by zane grey and the essential guide to fly fishing in the asturias :8)

I lent a dinosaur comic to a guy when I was 5. I'm still waiting for the bastard to return it.

The experience left me deeply scarred.

i'd imagine if anyone on the forum was happy to swap they would be happy to lend, a post asking if anyone had a particular thing might be simpler, no copywrite on lending books, the catch is you never see them again.

too true, i'm afraid. nice fag, by the way! :8)

Can you do that with Kindle ? I'd have thought files would in some way be digitally protected preventing them being passed onto another machine once you'd bought them  :?

Mike put up a link to this software.

http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows

Any ebooks you have can be changed to most formats for reading. I have been using it for a few years now and have books on Kindle for PC, Sony Ereader, Calibre has its own viewer and my daughters iPad. I have books downloaded from Amazon, iTunes and a couple of the free libraries, these are mostly out of copyright fishing related, Mike has put up links to a lot of them as I have done over the years.

" 7.Restricted acts
It is an offence to perform any of the following acts without the consent of the owner:

Copy the work.

Rent, lend or issue copies of the work to the public.

Perform, broadcast or show the work in public.

Adapt the work. "

On that basis then it must  be legal to lend books to forum members as you wouldn't be lending / swapping with " the public " and would have to be a forum member to participate

It is illegal if the public has access, and the owner of the forum could well be liable for facilitating it. Arguing semantics wont do you any good in court. The summary penalty is 6 months prison and a fine of 5000 pounds.  On conviction of any commercial use the penalty is up to ten years prison and an unlimited fine.

You are allowed to lend to "Friends and Family".  You may also lend to others a SINGLE ORIGINAL of whatever the object is.  You are not allowed to make a COPY of that work.

The copyright ( meaning the right to COPY) holder also has to enforce his own copyright, and this only works if he can prove financial damage.

In that case Mike, Book Clubs, where the members meet to read, discuss and swap books, wouldn't be able to function.
