Snake Roll

Fishing the Don yesterday in a fierce downstream wind with the double handler I came frighteningly close to wearing a very  attractive Willie Gunn earring once or twice. I realised it was time to  do something about this.

The double spey cast seems a bit convoluted and they say  you can achieve  much the same result with the snake roll.

Even I managed it after reading this, OK not brilliantly perhaps but a good starting point. Worth a look.

That looks like a standard roll cast which moves straight into a second roll? Maybe I'm just not seeing it right? I thought it was a complicated beast when I looked at the video on sexy loops some time back and decided I couldn't think of a use for it. So forgot about it.

I think that SL video is just  a bit of trick casting. He seems to be drawing several 9?s before executing the forward cast. Looks good though, he is one  mean caster.

its well worth learning as it is much better than the double spey. never really used it much for the troots though

The old boy  who I tailed a  for salmon on the Deveron on Monday ended his day early with a trip to casualty with an Ally's Shrimp through his bottom lip 

Aye Jim, it can be  a dangerous business salmon fly casting. Getting a size 14 greenwells stuck in you is one thing, a size 6 double Willie Gunn is another thing altogether.

I remember getting the treble of a big Toby impaled in my thumb on the Don. 7.00AM and not a chance of getting the doctor. I cut it out with a Stanley knife, wrapped a rag round it and carried on fishing. Martin was with me. He was only about 10 at the time and was really worried when he saw the mess and blood everywhere.  I was more worried about putting him off fishing.

Just thinking about it makes we wince. It was my own fault for spinning, bloody painful divine retribution.

I thought that SL video was the snake roll. just looked again and realised its not a real SR, the link was emailed to me by a "friend" as a cast to try!

He's caught me Hook line and sinker the dirty B....

The snake roll is one cast I use very often. It is great for dealing with heavy nymphs and also for just aerialising the line before going into a back cast. Great for changing direction. Just remember to keep the line downwind of you at all times, otherwise it can go tits up badly and end with a trip to hospital.

Single handed rod

First time I saw this cast I hadn't started fishing rivers, so, discounted it.
However, saw a guy using it last week on the Cart, and it seemed the perfect way of lifting of after a fished drift, that is, until he did the off the shoulder version 

Asked him if it was OK to watch for a bit, and logged the direction depending on which shoulder:
3 - 9o'clock/anticlockwise off his right, and 9 - 3/clockwise off his left.

During the wee gusty bits on Sunday on the Clyde, had a wee go at the anticlockwise version - I was facing upstream, on the right bank, fishing up and across to the left bank.

The wind prevented the "kiss" getting as close to me as I would've preferred, but it really is a fantastic way to get the line back up for a backcast and back over to the target.
The fly was getting caught at the top now and then though, any thoughts ?.
