I Was thinking of maybe one swap for loch flies and the other for River flies,

I think that's a good idea. I'll do some river flies.

As past swaps have been very much over subscribed, and I guess that's the reason  why we are having two this time,   I'll stick with one swap only to give others the chance to grab a place in one of them.

If it's being split into loch or river does this mean traditional flies are to be tied to recognised recipes?

Stick me down for the river swap.
I'll probably tie a wee flexi-floss emerger.

It's a bit of an artificial distinction really - In both cases I'd just tie what I use without worrying too much about recognised  patterns.

Steve - okey dokey, 15 Orange 'Cragach' Muddlers it is then.

Well done wildhibroon - pick something not too complicated and the practice of knocking up a bunch of a single pattern will see your tying coming on leaps and bounds. Get some proven fish-takers in return too.

Cheers,

Ian

But your question made me ask myself why.
So I checked it out.
It is mechanics.
As the vice is clamped to the edge of the table, when I open the vice the forces are acting towards the table.
Were I to place it the other way up, I'd be pulling against the table clamp, loosening it, and damaging the table.
See, I can talk pish as well.....

This is what you are getting from me, it's never had a name until now but I think of it as my "Night Shrimp" so that'll be it's name unless someone else has already tied it!

This is a first class all round sea trout and salmon fly and has caught many tourists for me. The tag is luminous and on a slow night you can turn your torch on and watch the reaction as a dead pool will suddenly come to life - doesn't always work but it can work wonders. If I use a dropper when fishing for salmon or seatrout this is usually it. I also fish a leaded version as a seatrout bug.  I only use about 6 salmon and sea trout patterns (not always the same 6 patterns every year) and this one has never been out of favour.

Dressing

Rear body luminous pink
Front Body Blue tinsel
both hackles very short orange (I use Genetic Saddle)

WHB

All my seatrout and salmon flies have inflated catch rates because I use so few - just like Sandy's "Hill loch nymph" will have an high catch rate because it's so often on his cast!

The fly evolved over two seasons in 1988/89 starting out as a worm fly variant but this one had something about it and caught a lot of fish for me and it's stayed more or less static for 20 years - the only change being the luminous material I use.

Didn't get out to post the flies on Saturday, but they're in the post today! Now no cheating Steve, in fairness you'll need to select your fly using the lucky dip method... just don't impale yourself in the process!

Edit: Forgot to say, my fly's a palmer verson of a teal, blue and silver - a good fly for me on bright days, especially towards the end of the season for some reason.  :)

Near enough Breac. Mine is dressed lighter without the badger hackle and has an oval silver rib over a silver tinsel body, just like the normal TB&S. Can't put a pic up yet though cos I've lost the cable for my camera!

Hi Steve,

Got the swap flees tied up early on but then got distracted when doing some back-end Hebridean patterns for the auction - sorry.  :(
Am now back at the tying desk though so should get the lot away in the post to you this week.  :)

Cheers,

Ian

That Jackdaw spider is a cracker. Looks a great fly to have on the bob with a hopper on the tail. Looking forward to trying it out.

I got all excited this morning when I came home from taking one of my wee one's to her hockey game to find a parcel with my name on it. It was just some tungsten beads I'd ordered. So either my postie's a fly fisher or it'll be Monday now!

Would you believe! There I was looking through the usual rainforest of junk mail on my junk mail shelf when I came across the bloody swap flies. Someone (probably one of my kids) had opened the envelope, then left the poly bag complete with flies in amongst the junk. So don't know when they arrived - could have been ages ago! Some really nice flies there guys, thanks.  :D

Mine still haven't arrived  :(
Mind you, I'm still waiting for last year's too. I reckon there's a crooked fishing postie in my local sorting office.
Hopefully they'll turn up over the next few days.

I participated in a fly swap organised through my club's forum about a year ago and not one fly has dropped through my letter box as a result. I'm beginning to think they're not coming!  :x

Hope you get your flies soon Paul.

Mine arrived yesterday morning but I've been too ill :sick;  with some sort of lurgy to investigate till today!

Looks brilliant, so many things for me to try that I probably wouldn't normally have fished and I've marvelling at some and thinking "I have to learn how to tie that." Thanks to all for cheering up a miserable few days.

Nah - I don't really live up to my name, to be honest
My old man told me and my brother about guddling when he had us out for a walk one day as bairns. I don't think we really believed him until he, seemingly magically, scooped a troot oot of the Burn of Lunklet. We were pretty impressed and spent the next while up to our oxters trying to do the same but without success - no patience and too much noise, I'd imagine.  :)
I've tried again a few times since but only once managed it, probably over 20 years ago. Maybe it's something I should set on to achieve next year.
