Title: Help
Post by: scotfly on December 24, 2011, 12:30:21 PM
I need some blind eye trout hooks, some horse hair and some older upeyed hooks in smaller sizes, 14-16's.
Anybody know where I can get some?

You can get horsehair here;
http://www.horsehairextensions.co.uk/products/index.php/ (http://www.horsehairextensions.co.uk/products/index.php/)

Loose tail hair is what you want for dressing flies on ( assuming that is what you want it for);

http://www.horsehairextensions.co.uk/products/index.php?route=product/category&path=33 (http://www.horsehairextensions.co.uk/products/index.php?route=product/category&path=33)

Also from bow makers;

http://www.bowhair.com/ (http://www.bowhair.com/)

For blind hooks just get some with a longer shank and clip the eye off with a piano wire cutter. ( A dremel will do it as well)

Do you need specific patterns of up eyed hooks?  There are lots available in various places but you can doubtless find those just as easily as I can.

Cheers Mike,
I should have been a bit more specific. The horse hair is for attaching to a fly during the tying process. Thinking of Macedonia and Ælian.
The hooks, not so old, more Halfordian era.
I was hoping someone may know a specialist hook maker.

I may be able to help with the horse hair.  What colour, length and how much would you be looking for?

You could have a browse on E Bay. What you would be looking for is not good flies but flies in old boxes with moth eaten feathers. It's the hooks you want not the fly. Lathkills sold horse hair but I am sure it was dyed stuff. There are one or two Americans sites that listed it as well but I can not remember which ones. Ronn Lucas Snr makes hand made hooks, afraid that too is an American supplier.
Mainly blind eye Salmon hooks but he may do Trout as well. A Google search may help.

PS I have about a doz Size 14 Long shank fine wire U/E dry fly hooks from around the 60s if they are any good.
