Now we have a lot more members I wondered if it was time for another swap?
I thought along the lines of the fly that worked best for you this past season.
If you are interested just reply to this topic with a description of the fly you are going to tie and why you liked it.
Shall we start when we have a dozen participants?
Steve
PS
How it works.
Tie one copy of your fly for everyone who takes part, send them to me and I will divide them up and send you back a fly from each tyer.
Hey why not
Peter
I believe Swithun may have a point Steve, green tailed kate, deer hair emerger etc seem to be the most popular type of flies at the moment, and we all probably have these  anyway, put me doon for the Fox's poopah, time to make an arse of myself again  You sure got a lotta patience Steve 8)
All the best
Chris.
Put me down for some olive Fredhogs
If you remember to tie the wing in first, the DHE is dead easy to tie. Also, do not faff-about getting the dubbing mix right. Buy ready prepared hares mask / guard hair mix (oddly enough available in the shop ) no kidding it is cheap and saves A HUGE amount of frustration. Dub the body very sparsely (use Sandy?s tip, take what you think you need and then ? it) If you tie the wing using light elk hair it is so visible even an auld ? blind bugger like me can see it 20 yards away.
Anyone who has not entered a swap here before would do well to consider it. For example the Johnny Bandy Catcher, is well worth having and not available in the shops!
I agree John,
If my flies were being judged in a beauty contest they would definitely be in the ?Daphne Broon? category. What matters is taking part. But there is not point in struggling to tie something you are not happy with, no fun in that. Keep it simple, after all pennels etc are easy and among the most successful flies ever.
Note for Swithun:-
For 'Daphne Broon' read "Tracey Emin'
Get the drift?
Regards, Tim.
Point taken lad's :D of course the pattern is not important, and whether we have them or not,it's the taking part right enough :D
All the best
Chris.
That?s 7 participants so far.
We are aiming for at least 12
Any more takers?
Im in but havn't a clue what I am going to tie but will come up with something
All the best
Richy
What aboot Allan L ? come on noo min, fit aboot some of these white hackle bibio emergers? :)
Count me in - I do river flies though - is that going to be OK? I'll do a claret nymphy thang that works well early season on the rivers I fish.
Hamish,
Glad you are in. Tie whatever your like. May I suggest that massive killer sweepie?s brush you gave me at Stmster?
    Shamed into it, what is the world coming to :)
I'll tie my Dryfly, assuming I have enough yellow Seal Fur :)

Good on you Sandy, still to try your floating nymph, put this right next season :D
All the best
Chris.
Steve, I say leave it another week to allow the stragglers time to catch up!
What about closing it next Friday?
i might join in but id have to ask my dad first.
Quote from: nant_fisheri might join in but id have to ask my dad first.
Good for you, but definitely check with your dad first!
Quote from: AcefisherHi All,
Ok. Next week ,s fine by me. I'll do a wee hare's ear nymph similar to the one on the left ! if that's OK. This works with browns in rivers and lochs and gets hit by those other pink striped things too.
:D
cheers,
Paul.
Paul, just to clarify, your flies don?t have to be ready next week. That?s just the proposed end of enrolment. Steve runs all our fly swaps and he will set the dates for sending in later.

my dad says its alright :D so count me in for the fly swap.
Count me in. Ihave a variant of the grouse @claret thats the best tail fly i've ever had, never off the cast. Jim.
could someone explain to me how the whole fly swap works?
Quote from: nant_fishercould someone explain to me how the whole fly swap works?
Easy enough. You choose the fly you want to tie. You then tie one for each member of the swap except yourself. So if there are 15 members, tie 14 (you can tie 15 if you want but this just means you will get one of your own flies back). Then send them off to Steve, by recorded delivery. Steve gets all the flies and sends each member one of each fly (except your own).
sounds simple enough. i think il tie a bibo with a red tag as it has been the top fly for me this season.
Hey Steve, I'm not superstitious 13 is fine :)
Cat's Whisker with a black marabou wing :)

Ah well then, It seems like a win win situation Fred 8) 8) .
Either way I am going to get a fish magnet from Hamish :D :D
All the best
Richy
Richy, that gold loch ordie has such "presence" you could easily pass it off as a dapping flee too!
It is one big mother!
Better get the vices oot lad's,this swap is growing by the minute  :D

Wish i was that organised Admin,at least i will get a [D.H.E]fredhog that sit's the right way up :D
All the best
Chris.
Relax Swithun, you only have to tie one fly for each person in the swap. So that is about 20 ATM.
Right, that?s my flees done, 20 anyway, if I need more I?ll tie them

they are brilliant!! i cant wait to get my one and try it out :D
my flies arn't going to look half as good as those :(
I've tried these belters from Fred already and as I have stated before,.................these flies are the equivelant to a king size mars bar to a diet   ..................they do serious amounts of damage. 8) 8)
Fred they look great and look forward to getting my hands on the up to date model

Don?t worry what your flies look like (note that no two of those above hogs are identical) as long as they catch fish for you. My own tyings are crap compared to Allan?s, Bob Wyatt?s etc etc . They still catch fish though and that?s all that matters. Preparing and presenting your flies properly is just as important (perhaps even more) than how well the fly is tied. With these hog / emergers what is really important is getting the body very wet and keeping the wing dry and well ginked so it fishes the right way up.
Johnny Bandy Catcher on the tail, Allan Liddle emerger in the middle and a Fredhog on the bob.
Ye?ll empty the loch!
thatl be the first setup i try when i get out at the start of the season then :)
I think what we should to do when the swap is underway, is start a new thread (or just add to this one) on how each fly is best fished. What say you lot?
Have we made a final setup for this swap? How many are confirmed in etc?
Peter :D

Peter,
We won?t know the final number until Friday when entry closes.
Steve, I have lost your address again. I?ll PM you for it.

and only 114 days until I can try mine out.
Steve
I feel sorry for the phantom postie. With all this recorded delivery stuff his own fly box will be badly depleted next season.
Quote from: Bandy Catcher
Fred - Is there a problem with the PM system. I checked messages, and couldn't find the message that I thought I had sent to Steve. Just deleted all previous messages and I'm sending one to you now. Let me know if you get it OK.
John
John,
Just got your PM and replied to it.
Quote from: Bandy CatcherSteve and Fred -
Just got both your PM's - thanks. Steve, the flies will be in the post this week, and I'll post on the site when I've sent them.
John
John, in case you did not pick up on it ------ Send them recorded delivery, costs you under a quid and better than tying all your flies again. Too many flies went walkabout in previous swaps for it to be a coincidence.
Sent Steve a PM and got a reply within minutes tonight :?
Peter
I also have one Fred
All the best
Richy
Chaps,
I got all these PM's
Pm?s sit in you outbox until the recipient reads them, then they are transferred to your sent box. That way you know if they have been read.
If the recipient never reads them they will never leave your outbox.
I've just re-read the list of flies being tied, and looked again at the pics that have been posted. Some slightly scary fleas there!!
Are we having a thread on how to fish these? I seem to recall a mention, but can't find it now. I could use some pointers on a few of these - never having heard of some of them except here.
Are they being added to the database - if so, I take it you'll want the dressings - do we add them or does Fred.
Sorry. had a stressful day - just need to not make any decisions about anything right now. Can't even decide on Bruichladdich, Bowmore or Glen Isla for my calm-down snifter!
Mine is easy. The tying is in the database already, there is a page on my site with a picture and the tying and you can read about how to fish it in any of my TR's as it is seldom off my cast :)
PM sent for your address steve. Drifter.
Flies in the post first thing in the morning Steve
Cheer's

Flies in the post today. First class recorded :)
could i get your adress to send the flies to steve?

A slight hiccupp getting my flees posted Steve  get them away first thing friday morning, hope this is o.k

Sorry Steve
My flies I think. We had a family crisis and I had to leave suddenly - I think I forgot to put the typed letter in with the flies.

is he a bit of a hcakle clipper by any chance?
Is he a good friend of Captain Haddock

Here you are Swithun.
"Dubbing Teaser
This is not my idea. An inexpensive dubbing teaser can be fashioned from an ice lolly stick and a piece of Velcro (the side with the miniature hooks). Simply trim a 1/2-3/4 inch piece of the Velcro to match the rounded end of the ice lolly stick. Next, glue the velcro to the stick with super glue or rubberized cement. Voila! It works great to make your flies "buggier"."
Closest pic I could find :)

Not quite. It was your article in FF+FT that had me and Johnnie Bandy Boy driving over to bandy bonanza land (Loch nan Lann) at great expense a few years ago.
That was before we knew you though. We would not get caught like that again would we John?
Actually it was a thoroughly enjoyable day, so we will let you off, despite the plague of bandy troots and John?s capture of the Scottish record smallest ever charr.
I was just thinking about Johnnies wee charr again. It might actually have been a male stickleback in full breading colours, but I can?t certain. The size and colour were definitely right though.
PS we fished na Bo and Lochindorb and Sarclet ?afore we kent ye. But I will gi'e ye the Warehoose credits.

Are you sending by registered post or normal snail mail? I'm having typical postal problems here in Cupar (thanks, no doubt, to the Edinburgh Sorting Office) and have lost 2 letters/packets so far this last fortnight.
De nada Steve.
I should have posted earlier, but only just realised you'd sent them off. I'l let you know when they turn up....please let them turn up...please...please.. I'll be good... I won't fish for 'bows.. honest!!!
No problem - I find it doesn't stem the pangs anyway - a bit like Kaliber...some of the colour, a bit of the flavour, but none of the effect!!
I'm gonna try to get out for Grayling over the hols - who cares if I catch some - just NEED to get onto a river!

The flies arrived this morning they are all brilliant! :D Can't wait to try them all out at the start of the season. My dad(gavin is his name, john was the name on the package) appears to be missing one fly that has a green tail, silver ribbing, black body and a small black hackle, but appart from that the whole thing is perfect. :D i hope to take part in future fly swaps. :)

You are a very lucky lad having a dad who takes you fishing. As a dad myself, I can say with certainty that your dad gets as much enjoyment out of it as you do. These memories will stay with both of you for all of your days.
Just got my flies. What a great selection.
Like John I intend to catch a fish on every one of them this coming season
Thanks to all for taking part and especially to Steve for organising it yet again
I am amazed at the tying quality
One thing though, I should really get an extra flee or two as I would have stolen the Bandy Catcher and the Black and White oot, o? Johnnie?s and Allan?s boxes anyway so I am nae better off?????
Oh Crap.
Nothing yet - typical.
I'm starting to sweat now! These flies look great - well, except mine that looks like it's been dragged through a hedge - now come to think of it....
