Title: Its that time again. Another fly swap!
Post by: Steve on February 06, 2006, 02:24:38 AM
Its time to organise another of the famous wild-fishing Scotland fly swaps
Lets see if we can get this sorted for the start of the season.
Just tie one fly for everyone who takes part and send them to me, I share them out and post them back to you.
All I need is your flies and an envelope with your address on it.
Please add your name to this list and the name of your fly.
In the past we have had as many as 18 join in, lets see if we can get more for this one.
You will get some really good flies and one of mine
When your ready to send your flies send me a PM for my address.
thanks in advance for joining in.

sounds like a good idea when I get round to learning to tie flees

Why don’t we have a theme of early season flies, that way everyone will get a crack at using the flies  within the next few months?

I would suggest spiders, great early season, practical and  easy to tie.

I will do the Snipe and Purple, even if the theme is not spiders.

I think i will tie a fly i made up a while ago. It looks pretty nice and im pretty sure it will catch fish. its in the fly database under "red tag variant". tell me if i should tie it up. the pics in the database i put on are pretty rubbish and don't do the fly justice.

whens the closing date for the flies to be posted?i guessed there would have to be one so that each person got sent there flies sent in one go in the one envelope .

i guess tying 15 of one pattern would do just now and if mores needed then i can always do the odd extra one if numbers increase.

does that make sense ? lol

Beaniboy,

That sounds reasonable. I have tied a batch of snipe + purples and as you say will add to it as required. Hold fire on sending  though until the entries close. That’s Steve’s decision, he is our Flee-Swap-Mester

Hi folks,

I love the idea of a fly swap, however as I have no fly tying gear I will not be taking part, this year, unless of course I tie some dead blue bottles to a size 1 mustard hook....dunno if they would work !

Cheers

Do I get a badge :D

I thought next Friday for the closing date, that should just about give us time to get it sorted for opening day.

Chris thanks for joining in again, The Charlie Mclean is a great choice.

ten boaber if you want, just do some really easy ones black spider or black and peacock, dont worry.

Harpo you never know

After hearing that Royal Mail are getting fined ?11m for lost and stolen mail can I once again request sending your flies recorded delivery.

Oh and finally who else would you all like to see taking part?

Thanks Steve

ive tied 12 of my Coom Diddlers and waiting to see how many more i need . ive been using a standard winged version of it for a wee while and they do the damage.

This is a new style bumble edition that looks really trouty so i guessed if i tied them up and handed them out they could get a test run under the enviroments they were designed for.

the flies name Is Scottish thru and thru but some of its materials are Irish in nature

I'd have liked to have taken part but to be honest I'm too feart that my flees will not be up to the standards required!  And 15 flies by next Friday might be pushing it timewise for me.  Maybe next swap I'll fling my hat into the ring.

All the best

Right guys count me in!

I'm going to keep it simple though and on the theme of spiders I'm going to tie the "Soft Hackle" pattern in Peter Gathercole's Fly-tying Bible book.  Bit like a Partridge and Orange with a longer body of seal fur and hare's ear - it looks pretty fishy to me!

Hope that's ok - any special rules I should know about or can you point me to where they've already been set out?

All the best

Gerry

Quote from: Bandy CatcherRight that's 20 tied up. I tied a new pattern, it's a spidery sort of thing, but it could be clipped to make an emergery sort of thing.

John

Can you unclip it to make it a spidery sort of thing again?

Right ,
somebody said spiders ,
Ill tie a sparse black hackle peacock herl bodied spider, got loads of peacock herl and black hackle feathers. Size 12 .
Howzat, easy and quick to batter out, maybe put a wee gold rib on it.
Nant fisher is champing at the bit, he lost a box with a hundred flees in it at the end of last season and refilled a new box in less than a week.

Count me in too Steve,

Don't have a clue what the recipie will be but I'm sure I will come up with something.
Quite like the idea of tying up yer own Flee and giving it a name so will have to give it some serious thought.
I'm quite envious of that chap who ties up that "Bandy type Flee" and there is the "Great Leader's Hog type Flee"

I think I will call mine the "Tennant's Spider" and will make it up using the colours of the afore said beer can

Yes..........daft as a brush  :spin;  :spin;

i used a standard wet version of it too good affect in orkney a few times when fish were on chironomids and olives subsurface.I think that the standard wet fly covers both insect angles and thats why it was effective(Or maybe it was just luck and it looked like a beasty)

The version i have tied up and sent to steve for everyone is a palmered/bumble version that i reckon could be useful as a bob fly or middle dopper(testing it on you guys)

Its quite fishy looking in the bumble format and would probably do well too imititate any hatching dark coloured midge or olive(as its leggy and greeny black)

i would probably use the fly in medium/poor light conditions as its believed dark olive and natural fly colours work /fish better in this type of light.

cheers

I've got about 10 done so far - grabbing minutes when I can. Yet another claret thing- but a true wet.

Tied on a size 14 heavy hook, bidy dubbed with a mix of dark claret seal, and red flashaboo with a gold wire rib. Full soft hackle using hen grouse tips.

This is a variant of a fly I used a lot on WoL early last year. Then, I didn't have the flashaboo, and I used a brown hen hackle instead of the hen grouse. This one seems much better, and the hen grouse should give a fair amount of movement, with the flashaboo being eye-catching in heavier water.

Calling it 'The Tandoori', after my favourite part of WoL - Currie

I should have them all finished over the weekend - kinda better - got to spend most of next week in Leeds and Wakefield.

I hope the fish like 'em!

Mines came this morning. Thanks for the flees guys. Good selection of different patterns to try this season.

tight lines for 2006

The one i sent was a

Coom Diddler  scottish for sooty/manky con merchant

hook - 12 - 14 wet
tail - english patridge
body - frankie mcphillips sooty olive dubbing
rib - gold wire
body hackle - black cock
head hackle - english patridge

the bumble i sent was a variation on a olive wet fly ive been using for a few years. The winged wet version does well for olive or dark coloured emerging nymphs or buzzers

Cheers

Quote from: Bandy CatcherIf everybody can describe their fly, and name it, I'll be happy to photograph them all and post the picture with their names and tyers on the site.

I tied a new fly which I called the 'Bing Bong'. Curved hook, black floss silk body ribbed with pearly mylar. Thorax of brown rabbit hair, and a hackle feather from a jungle cock cape (black centre, white tips) tied over the thorax.

John

that looks deadly.jumped right oot at me.hopefully will do the same to  the troots

Did anybody actually manage to take a picture of all the flies? The reason I ask is that I think the most successful fly I had in France was from either this fly swap, or the last one.

It was a wet black, with a sparkle tail. moved great in the water and took about 8 out of 20 fish (till I lost it in the mouth of a monster trout!).

I can kinda copy the tying, but would love to get the correct recipe. I'd like to tie a few for the friends I made in France.

Can anybody help?

Please?

Did that fly have a badger hackle, a sparkly tail, a dark peacock body and a thin copper rib? If so that was the fly i was having all the succes with on tiree caught me my two best fish on the fly and loads of others. I'm away to write up a report so you can see the results of the fly in their.

It is a cracker even if you didn't tie it. I am delighted to have the recipe, and thanks to whoever the tyer actually was. it works as an 'ordinary' wet and as a nymph. The hackles on the version I tied matched the length of the hook, so when in the water, the form a cone around the peacock body.

With the flash tail, I suspect that this may be mimicking a small aquatic beetle.

Anyhow, got me a 1lb trout this evening, nymphing amongst the ranunculus on the Fife Eden.  :D :D
