Title: Reference(s) for historic fly patterns
Post by: Robbie on November 06, 2018, 01:59:23 PM
I recently picked up a copy of where to fish in Scotland and am intrigued by some of the fly patterns described in the book. Has anyone else looked into older angling books ad the fly patterns included? Any references you could recommend? Primarily interested in wets and loch flies but any info appreciated.

Ones I have

Scottish Trout Flies....WH Lawrie   1966
Two Hundred Popular Flies & How To Tie Them......Tom Stewart  1979 ( compilation of four books from 1960 onwards)
Two Centuries Of Soft Hackled Flies.... Sylvester Nemes 2004 ( A compilation of flies from 1747- present day)
The Practical Angler....W.C.Stewart....1927 (with coloured plates of flies
Reservoir & Lake Flies....John Veniard 1970
Index of Orvis Fly Patterns....John Harder 1979

Apart from the two Clyde books not listed with the exception of Nemes these are the oldest all out of print. I have others but around 80s early 90s
If you give me the patterns I may well have the dressings. I did a series on an American Fly Forum many years ago called "Forgotten Flies" & that seemed to awaken some interest in Wet Fly over there.

Taff Price's "Fly Patterns" dates from 1986 and has a fair number of traditional patterns.
Terry Hellekson's "Fish Flies" is truly encyclopaedic and will dent your bank balance accordingly.

You can tie a silverhorn - female if you can get your hands on a barred corncrake feather (page 5)

Was just reading a great article by the incomparable John Gierach on flies and fly tying from an American perspective. "The Upside Down Weedless Rock knocker".  The usual top notch humorous writing from arguably the best fishing writer of all time.  :D
