Title: Blue dun para, step by step
Post by: Hans on March 12, 2007, 02:59:47 PM
This fly has given me enormous pleasure. Caught fish for me in heavily fished places, where other patterns were ignored.
Hook:      TMC 2387
Wing:      Blue dun darlon, Polyarn or similar
Body:      Pheasant-tail fibres
Rib:         Thin copperwire
Thorax:    Super fine dry fly dub, grey(ish)
Hackle:    Blue dun cock

Instructions:
Tie in the wing in upright position, securing the base of the wing with several turns of thread.
Tie in the copperwire and the pheasant-tail fibres.
Form the body, and rib with copperwire, preferably in the opposite direction.
Tie in the hackle along the base of the wingpost, pointing upwards.
Form the thorax with the dubbing. The last turn should be on the left side of the wing, considering the tyer is right-handed. This is why:
Remove the hook from the vise, and put it back in in the position shown below. The position of the thread will prevent it to fall, as it hangs on the wingpost.
Hackle around the wingpost, make sure each turn lies between the previous one and the hook-shank.
Use approx. 5 or 6 turns.
Use the whip-finisher to make a secure knot at the base of the wingpost. Trim away the excess, cut the wingpost into a sort of wingshaped form.
Use a generous amount of cement to secure the base of the wing and the hackle. Let dry, throw away the fly, start all over, and next time use less cement, or even none at all.... :D.
The last pic shows the fly from above.
