Just when you thought the season was over and you could settle down until March 15th
Anyone interested in a fly swap?
I thought the theme could be "The fly that caught you a memorable fish"
and like the last one a ?1 per entry donation to the forum
All you need to do is reply to this post, then once everyone is in we each tie 1 fly for all who take part, plus an extra fly for an auction.
send them to me with a SAE and your ? 1 entry fee
and I will do the rest.
Steve
OK Steve. An olive parachute with a krystal flash tail/shuck. Let's call it a Krystal Olive.
Alex
I'm game, if there is still room.
Likely do one of my Olive Flashback Spiders - caught a lot of fish for me this season on the rivers, not quite so sure if it will translate to the lochs.
Norm
Not sure yet what I'll tie but count me in
I'll break the bad luck Steve - a March Brown Emerger. It caught the 23" Brownie from the Don in my Piccie asa well as loads of others.
Peter
I'm in ,my fly hasn't got a name but it looks a bit like an olive ke-he.i used this fly a lot on loch leven, but its worked for me on most lochs.
Ok, i'm in. Will tie a couple of March Brown spiders, one of the few patterns i have that fish take with real confidence.
Cheers
Hi Steve
Count me in i will tye uses "Olive Game Spider".
my top fly this season. :D
Henry
Steve, I have added myself. I'll do my March Broon Parachute Dun. Fish it as soon as Rabbitangler's March Broon Emerger stops taking fish ….. It'll mean the emerging is all dun - - and they are on the surface. Funnily enough – like Peter I had a big broonie on the Don on this fly this past season. It's big and easy to see on the water – big enough to fish a nymph under tied on NZ style
Count me in Steve.
I'll tie up some Orange Hedgehogs. Not my top fly this season (don't think there was a top fly this season :( ) but it has been for a good many of the previous seasons.
Might have to try and run over a deer and shoot an orange seal to make up the order tho... :D
Regards
Steve
21 ...
I think I'll be ditching the Krystal Parachute Olive in favour of some wee wire bodied spidery thing 8)
Alex
lol have to say nice one .....
If you had never seen an Orange hedgehog before, I'm sure you would all be able to spot one!
Most of my hedgehogs should hopefully look like this one.
Steve
? way there

you're getting warm....................... :D
QuoteIve tried tying on upeyed dry fly hooks in the past and never really took to them. I'm also led to believe they are not as good as a down eyed for setting the hook.
'cause ye dinna want us catch ony fish
Norm
Because you've run out of down-eyes?
Alex
Oh Oh, see i am in serious company anyone know the number for Selectafly ?
I'll be doing the Ballon Sedge - this has become a style rather than a pattern: Dubbed body, Deer Hair wing, plastazote strrip tied in towards the eye then doubled back and snipped off - leaving a small tab over the root of the wing. It's my favourite dry sedge pattern and trout take it even when sedges aren't on the water.
Malcolm

Naw. keep trhem for yourself Malcolm. They will catch as well as the good ones.
All of mine are tied badly, because I hate tying flies. They will still catch fish anyway.
Alex
All my flies are scruffy - they work better that way, honest
Norm

Hi Steve,
I finally got to the post office today. Mr Grumpy behind the counter tells me they will be there by noon tomorrow "special delivery" - I'm told they don't do registered any more (but I suspect that is just so that he can make a few more pennies - he really was a miserable bugger)
Norm
This is my Orange Hedgehog.
The ones for the swap are a bit of a hotter orange though.
Cheers
Steve

I think it just goes to show what a cutting edge bunch of fly fishers we are :P
Andy
I think it goes to show that a lot of 'professional' angling writers are stuck in the past and very few write about 'new' patterns sticking to the old tried and trusted ones. It is a common theme in angling books that the flies of choice for north of scotland wild lochs are #6 or #8's, big bushy flies. I don't think I have ever used any ordinary flies that size other than a Murragh and that was in a full gale and big waves, it was the only thing that would float :)
