Title: Scrap heap challenge?
Post by: col on December 14, 2008, 02:40:39 PM
I thought about a wee fun competition no prizes just the  title of  "King of the scrap heap ",  to create a fly or from materials not specifically  meant for fly tying apart from the hook and thread. Anyone up for it .How can the  judging be done , can it be done like the photo gallery.

I'm up for this, Col :D

Given the early season nature of the challenge, I suspect I'll have to source some materials for weighting the fly :?  I walked past a dead blackbird today so maybe I should go collect it :roll:

I'm looking forward to this, great idea.

I'm in for this and I've already worked out what I'm doing. It might get a few stockies worried mind you :twisted:. Reckon I could get it tied up over the next couple of days.

Found this one stumbling. Someone tied a fly out of the broken parts of an I-phone.

Henry if you tied a dry fly with that stuff and added legs it would be a grass hopper. :)

I've started collecting bits in a tin, so far I have:-

A bit mink fur from a coat used in the school's christmas panto
Some fine electrical cable which I'm hoping to get some copper wire from
Some lead foil from the neck of a champane bottle
Some ribbons and tinsel associated with christmas wrappings
Some quality street wrappers
An old flying C found on the river bank (thought the lead body might come in handy)
Various feathers found out and about (no genetic hackles so far though :shock:)
A cork - not sure for what?

I'd really like to find a dead starling or maybe a pheasant but none so far!

QuoteGoat hair from a fence

Breac you've not embraced the dry fly have you? :)

Those look nice. The goat hair might be a good alternative to deer hair.

Now I know the meaning of 'Armchair angling'...

When my "boss" moved in with me, my ugly armchair became her cat's domain. Her claws soon made it even uglier.

(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc307/runarsson/Tying/material1.jpg)

It took me several years to realize what it was actually made of... CHENILLE!!! An entire chenille armchair. Is it irony or what... that it has been standing undiscovered in my tying room ever since I first got me a tying room.
The day finally came, the day I had waited for. The cat is getting old and is starting to get troubled. Bladder related, kidney related, mental... who knows. But it started to pee a little here and there and often on the armchair. My fianc? got tired of spraying it and decided that it was time to replace it with something plastic. I cut me a big piece from its backside and then we threw it away.
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc307/runarsson/Tying/chenille3.jpg)

Then it was time for "harvesting". I found a LOT of useful stuff in that piece... the strip on the picture is just a little piece I cut from it. Much left.
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc307/runarsson/Tying/chenille1.jpg)

I would say in very natural looking colors too...
(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc307/runarsson/Tying/chenille2.jpg)

I had to try it and made an entire fly, dedicated to the cat... that I had never liked, but that I still was grateful to. (Without it, the chenille had been throwed away undiscovered.)

"Armchair Kissimurra"

(http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc307/runarsson/armchair_kissimurra.jpg)

Thread: 8/0, black
Tail: Cat guardhairs
Abdomen: Cat underfur
Rib: Armchair "weave thread"
Thorax: Armchair chenille, mottled light brown
Hackle: Cat guardhairs spun in dubbingloop

Sorry Hans but you used real fly tying thread instead of the armchair weave thread to start the fly so you are technically knocked out.   But good fly though.   :lol:

In the first post col says (and I quote) "from materials not specifically meant for fly tying apart from the hook and thread", so I never felt a 'technically knocking' fist...

Best fished in a team of three or four just for effect.

Of course you could claim it was just a New Zealand Style cork strike indicator :shock:.

Amazing how effective a Tescos wine cork can be!!

I'm hedging my bets Col, the wife is working on Sunday so I'm on childcare duties - I might get down the Earn at last knockings (if I'm keen), so it will probably be a nymph or spider of some sort.  If not the next chance to get out will most likely be the following weekend and it will be on the loch, that will demand an altogether different fly.  Think I'll tie a few this week and see what takes my fancy.

Does it have to be a broonie or do grayling and escape rainbows count :shock:

This is my entry...

Name: Plastic Punk

Wing: Clipping from a Westie (badly home-dyed with a green felty - just like punks would do back in the day)
Beard: Natural Westie
Rib: Gold wire from a bottle of cheap plonk
Body: Strip cut from black refuse bag
Tag: Fibres from a pair of tartan breeks
Hook: What else... a safety pin cannabalised and bent to shape (naturally barbless). The hook eye was fashioned from a small split ring about half the diameter of the safety pin. It was straightened, folded in half and then whipped to the hook shank.

Finally got my arse into gear and tied a few tonight.

[attachimg=1]
A bug

Underbody - strip of lead from a rusting flying "c" found in the Earn
Body - Mixture of sheep wool pulled from a fence and rabbit off a coat used as a prop in the schools drama dept.
Under rib - reddish copper wire from the science dept.
Flash back - bit of a quality street wrapper
Over rib - Nylon Thread (Korbond) from Tesco's

[attachimg=2]
Wire Spider

Body - reddish copper wire "donated" by the school's science department
Thorax - More of the sheep/rabbit mixture
hackle - Teal feather from a bird shot by the jannie at the school

[attachimg=3]
Flashback Spider

Body - The sheep/rabbit mix again.
under rib - tying thread
Flashback - A bit green ribbon from a christmas presnt
Over rib - Nylon thread from tesco
Hackle - Teal again

Still not decided on which fly to go for and might tie some more variations but given it will probably still be grayling at the start of the season I'll probably go for the bug, what do you think?

Heh ref, you'll have to disqualify that Norm guy coz he has entered three flies and you took poor Breac to task and there are a few others.
Am seeing my mp.  I'm sticking to my spring salmon fly, was gonna tie one on a pin in my wife's sewing box but I will tick to the rools.

Come on General, be fair. The rules of the game do say that thread and a hook are allowed, but they don't say that they're compulsory! A hook made from scrap is in keeping with the spirit of the game after all, don't you think? Anyway, the flies made so far could be described as using 'fly tying and other materials that are not purposely bought in a shop or described as for fly tying by the merchant. All the hair (including the hair in my submission), feathers and wire materials, while not specifically bought for fly tying are all accepted materials. Hell, they are the usual materials used - just not shop bought!

Had another shot on the vice tonight....

[attachimg=1]
Zonker

Zonker strip - from the fur coat in the drama department, I think it rabbit.
Body - Foil from a quality street choccy
Rib - nylon thread from tesco
Eyes - bead chain from one of my daughters toys
Cheeks - bit of ribbon from round a christmas cake.

[attachimg=2]
Rubber legged bug

Body - the rabbit/sheep wool mix
under rib - redish copper wire from the science dept. at the school
flash back - outer wrapper from a quality street
legs - rubber from the inside of my home made landing net lanyard
eyes - bead chain from one of my daughters toys.

I'm still tending towards the bug from yesterday but I quite like the look of the rubber legged job from this evening.  Decisions, decisions...

Had another wee go on the vice tonight..

[attachimg=1]

Weight - Lead from the flying "C" found in the Earn
Body - Wool / Fluff off my daughter's pink panther (she was asleep when I aquired it :shock:)
Under Rib - Reddish copper wire from the Science department
Flash back - Quality Street Wrapper
Over rib - Nylon Thread from Tesco's

I've now become a convert to sheep's wool.  It makes an excellent dubbing material and is easily mixed with all sort of stuff, its also quite plentiful round here :D

If I get the chance to get out tomorrow I think I'll fish a team of "scrapy flies".  A couple of bugs and a spider.  Still not sure about which one to nominate as THE FLY.  I like the pink bug but that really is targetting grayling so to keep in with the spirit of things I'll go for the Brownish Wool and Rabbit bug that I posted first, its a better bet for a brownie... here's hoping :D

Thought I would have a try too! :)
[attachimg=1]
Pale cow "hair" off a fence this morning when out with the dug for the tail with a dark strand for a rib.  Some wool off a Jacobs sheep for the body and thorax, collected this arvo while out with the kids at Almond Valley Farm and a bit of crunchie wrapper over the thorax.  Anyone suggesting I only took them there for the purpose would be entirely wrong :8)  I tried to use the pale hair to tie it with but it was like a spring, every time I let the tension slip it unwound.

Hope everyone has fun giving their ''scrappies" a swim.  Good luck.

Just seems wrong to wet my abomination on a wee stretch of water that's already fallen victim to man's intervention. Check it our here, but don't have nightmares... http://www.whitecartwaterproject.org/contract1/.

So, I might give my fly a flee when I next find myself on a loch... don't fancy my changes though  :roll:

I'm giving mine a wee splash this weekend on a water with some wild broonies and a few long in the tooth Rainbow stockies - I'll see if the Bows have long term memory loss :lol:.

If I catch a pellet pig I'll post a photo of the Alien Species!! :shock: prior to its demise into my smoker :).

Cannot see my challenger working too well on the broonies though :(.

I couldn't help it, the wee devil on my shoulder insisted I do it :twisted:  While carring out some pollution control today I slipped on my wee brown "scrapheap" bug and two casts later:-

[attachimg=1]
I actually had a double hook up but the other one came off and the scrappy stuck :D

[attachimg=2]
Small and not perfectly formed :?

I feel guilty even posting these so I think I'll wait and see if I can catch a real fish on my bug before claiming a catch - I'm not allowed to count rainbows for the clubs catch return anyway, so technically this fish does not exist :roll:
