What do you use or would you recommend??
I have a birthday looming :D :D :D
cheers Pete
I use a simple Weaver lever vice very cheap but reliable hook holding and that's all I want. A quick internet search shows it her half way down the page
http://www.wharfedaleangling.co.uk/Vices.htm
I use a cheap regent vice, it can take any size of hook and rotates enough for my needs. I particullarly live the lever action, no pussy footin' about with different hook sizes:D
Norm
After nearly forty years of tying I got myself a real waldron vice last year. for five years before that I was using one of the snowbee rotary vices (not the snowbee waldron type) and found it a cracking vice. Though if I was to be picky the knuckle joint on the stem can be a pain if you don't tighten it up fully. There is one without that joint which a friend uses happily.
Peter
Same as Clan ford I use a regent with a solid base I also have the clamp version . In my opinion it suits all fly tying needs. Like Clan ford I reallly like the lever action of holding the hook.
I can't for the life of me understand why people will purchase vices in the 2 to 3 hundered quid bracket for the simple function of holding a hook and dressing it.
The Regent vice is a good serviceable and cheap vice which will give you many years service. ?20.00 delivered http://www.anglers-lodge.co.uk/product/category/25867/ROTATING_REGENT_VICE I had one and tied 1000's of flies on it before I sold it on and upgraded to.....
A step up, but still a "side lever," like the Regent, is the Weaver "Scottie" ?60 delivered http://www.oreillysfishing.co.uk/acatalog/OReillys_Fishing_Fly_tying_vices_Weaver_and_Snowbee_Waldron_14.html again, I had one of these and if it's in your budget is the vice I would recommend.
After that the world is your oyster, according to your budget. Anything from Anvil, HMH, Dyna-King, etc will be good, all the way up to the LAW at ?450.

Me neither, I would never use such a cheap vice. :crap
Clan Chief, like everything in life, you get what you pay for. If you want the best, can afford it and justify the cost, then why not?
I tie 1000's of flies every season, flytying is my passion. I wanted the best and could afford it at the time, and after a great deal of thought I bought the LAW. Could I justify the cost? Yes, I love the aesthetics of it, it's functionality, its ability to do everything I ask of it, and more. It has increased my flytying pleasure.

And what else is there to any hobby? Same with tackle, buy what adds to your pleasure.

it's OK, I'm just pissed off coz I've bought a new vice as a result of this thread. Brian Tulloch is really in for it now................ :D
I've got the Snowbee Waldron one.
It works fine but it didn't change my life.
PS - the old "buy the most expensive equipment you can afford because it must be better" adage doesn't really stand up to scrutiny, though C&F Designs certainly do very well out of it .

Agreed. I have a few of their fly boxes. Good but not worth the money.

You used the "E" word shame on you!
Another one for the Regent pedastal, does what I need for my fly tying.

Thanks for all the responses guys.
Scotfly put me onto a site which reviews a wide selection of VICES (my apologies for the horrendous spelling error there ) which looks quite handy.
http://www.flyfisherman.com/ftb/hwvise/index.html
Worth a look.
Cheers Pete

I use an anvil apex vice Pete, it is a nice piece of kit without spending a fortune. Hopefully it should last a lifetime.

I just took delivery of this vice. An excellent piece of engineering. Hopefully I will now be able to tie very small flies without going nuts. The service from that ebay seller was astonishing. One working day and it was here.
And here are the first flies tied with it. Size 18 and 20 parachutes.

Very nice indeed.
Nice, Fred. You couldn't rustle up a quick 40 of those in a size 14 could you? :)
Alex

If only I could get size 14 hooks ........................... :?
there seems to be a world shortage of size 14 Kamasan B170s :(
I blame Dennis he's used them all up doing these SBS's :D
Very nice Fred. Is there a knack to the spilt tails, I tried a technique from one of Dennis's sbs with a ball of dubbung but couldn't really get it to work :?

isn't the b400 very similar?
I have been unable to get these in 100's since last November. :?
just checked GAC Fred and they have them in order in 100's, probably means you could get them for Xmas. :D Have you tried Brian at the Big Reel in Ayr, he used to do them in 100's, his no is 01292 290011.
Nice flies by the way Fred.

got some b170 14s in the Orvis shop in Banchory today. In 25s - a dear way to buy ............. :(
Like the look of them regents, think i should splash out ?20 on one, this is what greeted me when i opened the tying box today.
After following this thread, I bought one of the Regent vices myself. I really like it and it's wonderfully chunky!

John, looks like its a goer for me then.
Col, it is indeed a veniard. I started tying when i inherited boxes of stuff from my mates father in law, Mr Todd from the Dumfries area who had just passed away. Some things like an all wooden fly reel were collectables which i sent back.
I still use lots of his material today and that above was his vice.
Think its time to move on. I have made big strides in the fishing gear department and could almost pass as an angler. Have even bought a pair of breathables for the summer after nearly collapsing on the Lanarkshire Avon from heat exhaustion last August wearing neos.
Cheers,
EW
EW - you won't go wrong with the Regent as they are a good piece of kit and great value for the money. My only slight criticism is that they aren't so brilliant with larger hooks - if you'll be tying a lot of pike or salt water flees (could just be mine though?). For your average sizes 18 - 8 however they're great.
Your screw-tightening veniard vice brings back memories - it was also my first vice 30 odd years ago bought in a little boxed veniards starter kit with saved up pocket money from the local ironmonger/tackle shop.
Cheers,
Ian
Looks like they are a re-badging company. They look as if they buy unmarked items from various companies and add their branding to them. There are a few items on their website that look familiar :)
Cheers for that Col - hadn't actually spotted that they could be 'adjusted' like that - will give it a shot.
