I do burn them and dance arround them burning and chant only on full moons though, if the hooks are usable i generally strip the materials off them and use them again, some killer patterns never even get wet you see, unless i fall in like i did yesterday! my new probelm seems to be fly tying materials, man i cant help my self!

I'm just working my way through my fly box either losing or fishing flies till they're done. Then I strip them for re-use.

I bought a nice wee c&f type slit foam box for ?2.50 which takes about 100 flees max. That and a dry fly box will be it for me from now on. I'm actually considering doing away with using the waistcoat as well and just carrying my waterproof. When we were kids we carried all of our tackle for the day in a couple of wee cigar tins and we still caught fish.

I fished a comp at Harelaw a couple of years ago and forgot my multitude of fly boxes so was forced to fish with the one I had with me and an old knackered shakey rod. Guess what ? I won.

like embroidery where old women end up with too many over elaborate bed covers for the same bed

A very astute analogy Alan.  That I think sums it up well.

I've just come to the conclusion that there is no holy grail of flies apart from the one or three which is, with a little bit of experience, on the end of your leader.

It's nice to tie and use new flies but the amount of patterns and variations of patterns which are available today are endless and I came to the conclusion some time ago that most of them come from magazines looking for material for their content and manufacturers looking to keep their production levels up.

Bah, Humbug.

just an observation, i spotted a thread on another forum about how to photograph your flies, appears some invest in pretty specialised equipment for this, i still dont know why on earth they photograph them.

Fly-Porn as it is commonly known :)

Fly tying can become as far removed from fishing as casting can. No harm in it though, it's  just another  hobby.

Black-Don

To be serious, fly tying is an art in itself and even the photography involved can be quite technical. When you see the quality of flies guys like Davy MacPhail, Captain Fishy, Scotfly et al turn out you've got to take your hat off to them and give some big up respect. I'm just trying to reduce my box content for practical purposes.

If you're talking about the thread I think you are Alan, a couple of the guys on there are top of the league when it comes to tying and photography. Colin sent me some information on gear which let's you produce A1 photaes without breaking the bank.
