Hello all i tie a lot of flies with light - medium dun Snowshoe wings.I want to carry a darker dun marker pen to colour my wings up at the water when i feel a darker wing would work better.Looking at this chart which one looks closest to dark dun. http://www.letraset.com/pdf/ProMarkerColExp.pdf  . Cheers

A dun is one of the more difficult shades. A highly sought coloured hackle that represents the wings of many of our olives. It has many variations in it's range. A true dun is almost impossible to find & many a fly tier has in his mind what dun should be. I was always thought of it as as near the primary colour of a Starling wing so with that in mind I would pick either the Umber to cover the "dark" or the lighter Warm Grey 5. If you are particular about your hackle selection I would recommend you purchase this book.

The Book Of The Hackle...........Frank Elder.... Scottish Academic Press
ISBN:  7073 0223 4

May be out of print but a definitive book on hackles to my mind.

Cheers Highlander i will give the Umber a go.I am really loving using snowshoe at the moment.I was out for a few hours yesterday & the trout were smutting on very small black flies. So today i have been tying some snowshoe midge emergers & midge clusters down to size 26. :D

If you look at the colour of most wings a very pale grey is probably the nearest solid colour - there are exceptions of course for example march brown/brook dun are mottled brown and iron blue are a very dark steel grey.

It's one of the reasons I don't rate natural CDC particularly highly preferring deer hair and snowshoe the latter is a really good match to my eyes if not the trout's.
