Hi All,
What are Your opinions on the TMC Aero Dry wing?
Been using Lureflash Antron body wool for wings and posts,but thinking of trying this as it's getting good reviews.
Is it worth the £7.50 plus p+p?or is it just hyped up?
What are People using as alternatives?
Any views greatly recieved.
Cheers Kev.

Seeing as how the wing is just a sighting post on a parachute and plays no part in floating the fly, I think it is hype and too expensive.

The stuff I use isn't exactly cheap either, but you get a reasonable amount. It's called McFlylon. It has the required degree of crinkle to stop the fibres clogging together when wet. I like it for indicators when nymphing too. http://www.wildfisher.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=13008.0

Other stuff I use is Parapost http://www.caddisflyshop.com/para-post-wing.html  It was pretty reasonable in terms of cost.

i find the wee twists every few inches in the hanks annoying

The latest bunch of McFlylon I bought is like that. Very annoying. The first stuff I bought a few years back was OK

 I have thought of trying it but at that price I will give it a miss. Believe Andrew Moray uses it, he might want to comment. It certainly appears to be well thought off but there are many more I am sure equally good & at reasonable cost.

I just use unraveled polypropylene twine for most stuff.  You can get it in loads of colours, it is intrinsically hydrophobic and costs virtually nothing in small amounts. You can find it in loads of places.

I got a lot of the stuff at a local DIY market. They were selling it as "universal twine" in meter lengths and I bought quite a bit in various colours. It's very cheap and extremely useful for a lot of things.  It's the same stuff I used to make these;

http://www.wildfisher.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=16609.msg177435#msg177435

Scroll down to find the coloured curtain cord here;

http://www.essentialscompany.co.uk/Cords%20and%20Webbing.html

I also make strike indicators with it.  It floats (it is lighter than water)and is also intrinsically hydrophobic so requires no treatment at all. You have to buy it in the colour you want because it can not be dyed or coloured. It is impervious to most chemicals.

There are different types!  You want the hydrophobic stuff.  Some baling twine is made in a hydrophilic version and is bio-degradable.  That's no use for fly dressing etc.

There are lots of suppliers if you look on the web.  Here is one;

http://www.macramesuperstore.com/macrame/Macrame-and-Jewelry-Cords/Holly-Twist-6mm-Macrame-Cord.aspx

You can make thousands of flies and other stuff with a 100 yards of the 6mm stuff, but it also comes in various diameters and if you can get shorter lengths that's all you need.  I paid 15 cents for a meter of the 6 mm stuff at the DIY market I mentioned. I have dressed hundreds of fly wings with just a small amount of a one meter length.

Strike indicators made like this with it are really great;

Loads of places have it, even curtain shops ( used as curtain cord) I found a couple for you but you need to look around.

You can get every colour you want or need here;

http://www.carolsrugs.com/fly_fishing_cord.htm  and it's cheap enough. These offer sensible amounts for flydressers

If you look around, loads of places have it for various uses.

I quite like it. As I don't have any sort of parachute hackle tied into most of my efforts the TMC is the wing and the sole means of floating, and it does that job very well.
I like the softness making it easy to work with, and the way it drifts in water (as close I've come across to CDC without the maintenance) Most of all I like the way the medium dun shade seems to change colour to let me see it in light, the gloaming and into darkness.

As for price, I reckon a card will do me three or four seasons so a few extra quid it's nothing compared to permits every year, waders and boots every couple of years.

I tied up some F flys with Mc Flylon, they didn't pass the washhand basin test, sinking too soon for my liking. Tiemco was way better, I also find tiemco is easier to use as a post for klinks, slightly stiffer, it doesnt bend when turning the hackle under tension. I still have around half the £7 coil, bought two seasons ago, there are many similar, cheaper products but for me it is the best.
