Can anyone point me in the direction of a book of patterns purely aimed for river fishing ?.
I have only just started river fishing this season so have no idea on books available.
I have already tied up several patterns of flies ( 2 boxes ) worth , but always looking out for other patterns to try , and work on over the winter months lol.

cheers

You can download a lot of free books here;

the patterns in these books still work as well as they ever did.

Here are a few I picked out for you which may be especially useful;

There are more of course, and the other books there are all good,  but these should suffice to begin with.  You will find enhanced plates for most of the flies in the relevant sections. Just scroll down the thread at the board links I gave. As shown here;

There are very many more modern books on flies, but most are no better than those given, and many are a great deal worse.

Some more info there;

Always best to get input from as many sources as you can. There are a lot of very knowledgeable people here.

Hope you enjoy the books.

:D Mike is the THEE link king! He has provided me with enough reading material to last me for the next ten years, at least!!!  And now I have to go and download even more!!! :D

Scotfly thank you for that Amazon link will stick one in the basket.

Yes Mike you are right , always happy to see what others suggest , i am busy reading Brook and River trouting at the moment i am enjoying looking at the old layout of step x step in the book.
That is a side of fly fishing that interests me a lot , the history side of it. i would very much like to obtain an old style Loch fly rod as used on Loch Leven back in the day of wearing tweeds or before that.
not sure on exact name bit it was just a single piece rod , but it is something i would like to try and do so i can keep a bit of history alive.

One of my main areas of interest.  Plenty of stuff here;

You can find Cotton's flies here;

They also still work very well, better than a lot of modern stuff on occasion.

Also, one of my favourite books of all;

Book are fine but nothing beats getting out on the river. Make mistakes but learn from them. No substitute for experience.
Not books but usefull never the less. Oliver Edwards does some fine river  DVD's they tell me.
