What are the origins of this fly ?

Who created it and where did it come from ?

Clan Chiefs, Kate mcLarens, are in my opinion all derivatives of this fly.........am I wrong ?

Zulu - Final Attack

Like many old flies the originators are lost in the annals of time. This one  could possibly hail from an old Dove pattern around Cottons time. Another connotation was that is was a fore runner of The Black Pennel or a Black Palmer. Red tails were often used as embellishments to black flies & with the colour combination of red black & silver is is no wonder that it is a good fly. Along with the Bibio it is one of my "must" patterns in the box.
It was at one time banned from from competitive angling is was thought of as so good.
Generally thought as a loch fly though the Blue Zulu is one of the best flies to put before Sea Trout straight off the tide. Generally fished as a dropper & to that effect I prefer is palmered rather than most shop bought ones which just have the standard collar hackle.

Put a red shoulder hackle on it and it becomes a brilliant fly  :wink:
