i've been having a bit of a problem with mr pike coming a bit short at present (mrs pike's another story: nowhere to be seen! must be the weather...), so thinking about experimenting with "stinger" hooks. i'm using a size 12/14 single or treble (de-barbed) tied using a half blood knot to 25lb stiff nylon. a simple overhand knot at the tag end is the whipped into place on the hook shank and the knots coated with CA adhesive. then the fly tied as normal. i'm using nylon as it's much stiffer than wire so no problems with tangling during casting

anyone else out there got any experience with this type of fly, or any thoughts/observations?

Have you tried tying the flies shorter? There has to be something at the tail end that is acting as the target spot. Move the dressing up the shaft of the hook so that the tail and end of the fly are over the hook point which should then be nearer this target spot.
Don't worry, be happy.

well, it appears to work. took 4 tonight (none of any size), but all hooked in the jaws. see your point about close to the eyes, though. i like the idea of a false front hook. i suppose another way of doing this would be a tube fly with a long mount?
