I saw this on Fly Forums. An interesting episode of  fly fishing history. Nice to see how the fly was tied without modern tools like bobbin holders.

Interesting how the adams as we know it is slightly different. No tippets for the tail and a mixed hackle. Great simple fly.

The tippet tail is a new one on me too. I'm going to tie some like that because it will give the fly some extra contrast. The Adams is the American Greenwell's Glory; it's a general purpose fly that will catch anywhere.
