Is it not time manufacturers started sticking to some kind of standard? Frankly unless you stick to one make you have no idea what you'll get when you order hooks.

Look ate this photo - the top hook is a Fulling Mill size 16, the lower hook is a Tiemco size 21. This is ridiculous.

I ordered klinkhammer extremes sz16 to do some dries last year, the gapes small but it's a really long shank so actually what you get is a large dry fly. Bigger than I need, pain in the arse really  :x

What you have with the Tiemco is a 1, 2 or 3x long shank hook Fred which takes it up a size or two although the gape stays as a #21

This pdf from Tiemco shows the different hooks and their hook lengths and there are a few #21 I can see with a 1x, 2x and 3x long shank basically making them 1 to 3 sizes bigger in the shank.

Here is a page of hook size charts and it shows the comparison of different sizes of hooks and you can see how they are stepped.

The hook size is based on the gape of the hook not the length of the shank.

One oddity I keep coming across in fly tying books is references to flies tied in old style sizes but they look like modern sizes. Was there an attempt to resize/ re number flies?

Unless you enjoy loosing fish these are THE worst hooks ever designed, especially if you de-barb them.  Small gape + long shank makes for a poor hold.

It's not just different brands I have partridge shrimp hooks and partridge Czech nymph hooks both flash point. Ones a size 14 the others size 10 and the difference is minimal [attachimg=1]

Aye the way the gape comes round sharply ( like on the bottom hook above) probably doesn't help hook ups, maybe a more open rounder gape would help

Tyro

Thanks, I think I understand that chart :?

There has been a few attempts over the years to bring a standardised hook scale. They have all but fell by the wayside. I tend to use the old one " The Redditch Scale" an example shown above (old).

I have to agree with that one.
I hear & maybe someone can confirm or deny that Partridge are discontinuing Salar Salmon hooks. I never did like the look off them.
