This is the Elk Hair Caddis a great sedge imitation from Al Troth. I now tie the wing in on this one the same way as Hans Weilenmann ( http://www.danica.com/flytier/ )  does on his CDC and Elk ( http://www.danica.com/flytier/hweilenmann/cdcelk.htm ) For the hackle in this one I prefer to use Indian capes.

Instructions assume right-handed tyers

Hook - Kamasan B170  8-18
Thread - Brown UNI-thread 6/0
Hackle -  Red Game
Rib - Copper Wire
Body - Brown Seals Fur
Wing - Elk Hair

STEP 1
Mount the hook in the vice, attach the thread then tie in the hackle as shown, shiny (good) side towards you.

STEP 2
Wrap the thread down the body catching in the rib as you go. Then add a small amount of Seals Fur to the thread. Don?t overdo the dubbing on this one.

STEP 3
Wrap the dubbed thread to form the body.

STEP 4
Wind (palmer) the hackle down the body and secure by winding the rib up the body through the hackle. Tie the rib in and twist the waste off.

STEP 5
Prepare the wing for tying in by taking a bunch of Elk hair and aligning the tips in a stacker. (Some tyers prefer to leave the tips as they are) Holding the wing in your left hand, offer it up and judge for length.

Then, without moving the wing, transfer the grip to your left hand.

Then cut the butts square with the eye of the hook.

Finally, secure the wing by taking two tight wraps over the butts at the tie in point, then one turn through the middle of the butts as 45? finishing with the final wrap under the butts.

You can see a video of this method here. ( http://www.danica.com/flytier/hweilenmann/cdcelk.htm )

STEP 6
Whipfinish and varnish for the completed fly. Don?t be afraid to soak the wing butts with the varnish.

The completed fly.
