Saw this on the river today, I think it's an Autumn dun, any ideas?

I thought brook dun, but I'm no expert.

From an anglers perspective (and a trout's :)) I don't think it matters as long as the flies hatch and lay eggs in the same way.

QuoteThe nymphs of Ecdyonurus species crawl out of the water margins, troot are unlikely to realy target them.  You don't get the classic rises to emerging/hatching flees as you would get with most upwings.  Spinners are more likely to get the troots attention though

I knew that the brook duns were crawlers rather than swimmers floaters Steve. That's what I was getting at in my post :) I didn't know about the other false MBs

What I was getting at is, a grasp of basic entomology lets you adapt your tactics. No point in fishing an emerger for example if you see the fish are taking brook duns or any of the false march browns. The true march brown is a different situation entirely.

My guess is also for a Large Brook Dun. I've got a few books including Macadams and LBD looks favourite.
