Firstly, a  big thanks to Magnus Angus for judging the flies and for providing photographs of  each fly entered. A great effort Magus, much appreciated.

Magnus's decisions are of course final.

The level or participation, in spite of the free entry and considerable prize up for grabs was, to put it mildly, woeful. Out of those who actually registered an interest in participating, only 7 actually sent in flies. A big thanks to those 7.

Each tier was allocated a number:  1 to7 in the order the flies were received. Their flies were then only identifiable by myself. They were sent to Magnus who then carried out the judging and who had no idea at all which tier had tied which flies.

Just a reminder, each tier had to send in

1 x Ace of Spades size 10 normal shank
1 x DHE size 16 tied on appropriate emerger hook
1 x Klinkhamer Special size 16 tied on appropriate emerger hook
1 x Pheasant Tail Nymph size 14
1 x  Stimulator size 12  normal shank
1 x Invicta: size 12

Patterns as  in the step by step section of the fly tying forum.

Here are the tier numbers

1. Wee Bri
2. Henry of the Waterbouys
3. Scotfly
4. Just Steven
5. Steve
6. Bandy Catcher
7. Rabbitangler

Magnus judged a 1st, 2nd and 3rd for each fly.

Places points given for each fly were
1st place = 20pts
2nd place =10pts
3rd place =5pts

The section winners were :

Ace of Spades
1st Tier 7
2nd Tier 4
3rd Tier 1

Invicta
1st Tier 3
2nd Tier 4
3rd  Tier 6

Klinkhamer
1st Tier 7
2nd Tier 4
3rd Tier 3

PTN
1st Tier 4
2nd Tier 1
3rd Tier 6

Wyatt DHE
1st Tier 3
2nd Tier 7
3rd Tier 4

Stimulator
1st Tier 7
2nd Tier 4
3rd Tier 6

This converted to:
Tier 1 – 15pts
Tier 3 – 45pts
Tier 4 – 65pts
Tier 6 – 15pts
Tier 7 – 70pts

Overall  Results were:
First place – Tier 7
Second place – Tier 4
Third place – Tier 3
Equal fourth Tier 1 and Tier 6

The winner is therefore Rabbitangler!  Well done Peter! I'll get your address and send you the materials

A few comments from Magnus. Remember that as judge of the FF+FT league and a former professional fly tier, he judges to a very high standard and I am sure that is exactly the way we all prefer it to be.

Real mixed bag. Lots of stray bits at the heads.

Looks to me like a few are using floss at the head for colour where coloured thread would be far more secure and tidier.

Lots of tails down on the side of the fly, some proportion issues, tails too long or too thin.

Ribbing varies from poor to good. Evenly spaced and regular angles look better and make a tougher fly.

I don’t think many of these tyers make winged flies very often. Some good efforts, slightly hampered by the way they tied the body.

The DHE was slightly surprising – some just way off the mark – a few nice ones and a couple which had morphed into comparaduns.

I hope Magnus will come on and post a few more comments, every tip helps us improve as tiers.

Once again many thanks to all who took part

Magnus

Good effort guys.
I tried to look at these as fishing flies more than framing flies, applying ideas of good technique where they bear on factors like durability and bugginess.

I'll try to answer questions if you have any - thing to do might be compare the patterns and placed flies and see if you agree with my placings. If you don't agree - my obvious escape clause is I have the actual flies.

scotfly

Cannot argue with Magnus' decision.
Well done Rabbitangler, a truly superb set of flies and the deserved winner.  :allhail

The General

Yes, well done Rabbitangler, some very fishy flies there but can I also give a big hand to Just Steven, some crackers there also.

Fred with your magic wand could you not put all the individual flies in columns of seven and each fly in a row.
A simple no if you cannot will suffice  :P

Davie

Scotaidh

Well done.

Some good flies in there.

Any chance of a summer competition?  Salmon flies maybe?

Crawhin

Thanks guys for the compliments, but it must have been a close run thing, especially when I look at some of the flies others tied and the turkeys I threw together.

To echo others thanks to Fred & Magnus
