When using ostrich herl or peacock, try using fluorocarbon as a rib

Why not just use fine gold or copper wire, ideal for herls, sinks into the herl & any bits showing can give that added wee attraction in many instances. Other thing I do is a light smear of clear varnish on the thread body then wrap the herl. If indeed the herl breaks it is less likely to unravel.
Oh but some of you do not use varnish  :roll:

Or indeed the tag end of the tying thread. It vanishes too and is very tough.

A single strand of twinkle (usually brown or olive) incorporated into a corded chenille of peacock herl works pretty well for me on several flies. It compliments the irridescence of the herl quite nicely. GSP threads work well if you want something finer and less obvious.





I don't really use ostrich herl very much.

yes Tim it's a cracker isn't it. There are some really great tiers here - .D., Scotfly, Highlander, Rabbitangler to name only a few........... make my efforts look poor.
