I used 1.5 litre coke bottle tops for housings, and put a plastic lens on them.

One may also modify existing torches quite easily.

The "Black" LED light described at one of the URL?s above may be used for checking materials for fluorescence.
If you want to buy a headlamp, then one of the best is the Petzl Tikka.
