Looks like the jelly you get from the absorbent crystals inside a babies nappy after it has been left lying about in the rain for a week or two.

I heard that program and there was a subsequent article in the paper too.

People used to think it was the remains of meteors.

It can even climb trees.

my fist thought was that it was a farm by-product of some sort,it does look like the stuff u get in a nappies, maybe to keep feed dry or summit ,apparently the cant even tell if its organic or not,
the reason i ask on this forum is its full of people who like too get oot an aboot and thought they may have seen it themselves

Seen it loads of times in many different places, they all seem to have one thing in common..... Damp surroundngs. I can only conclude that it is some sort of chemical leached from the earth or some sort of fungus, it may even be inorganic in that it is a life form based on silicates.

Nearly all known life is carbon based but some are based on other elements and found in the deep ocean floor around volcanic flumes.

Diatoms do have silica cell walls but thier life processes are organic ie carbon based.

I don't think there are any known silica or inorganic based life forms. Remember that classic Star Trek episode?

Could it be digested diatoms?
All organic bits digested and the silica left. What creature would do that?

Mystery solved by the WFF yet again.

This has to be one of the best windows on natures fascinating world around.

I bet darwin would be proud of us. Well done Gav  :allhail

I think that's the most likely explanation that sounds creditable to me.

Had some of these jellys in the back yard. I have a wee tray that I sit some plant pots on like a water bed to keep them moist. A few slug pellets had fallen past the pots and a slug(deceased) was encased in the jelly eing digested I think. Interesting thing is that several jellys had formed away from the slug and some seemed to be active on the slug pellets.

There must have been about 10 of the things almost floating in the tray of rainwater and various matters.
