Title: What's Your Strangest Catch
Post by: hopper on December 09, 2012, 09:58:05 PM
Many year back when i were a lad i was out fishing on The Luther water at the Dowrie pool with a bunch of worms under the supervision of one of the senior members. The Dowrie came in at that time at right angles to the flow of the Luther and cause a big circular flow in the pool, the season was wearing on and the evenings were short and darkness came down quickly.
The worms were cast time after time with the small trout rattling them but it was the larger silver cousins we were after, the rod started to draw that long slow heavy pull you get, i strike and we are into something heavy it stayed deep but kept on taking line and using the current, now and then in the 20 minute struggle with the light fading we would get a flash of silver just below the surface but never saw the fish right only the glimpse, another 10 minutes passed and i was getting the better of it and Isaac was ready with the net i got it into the quiet back water to be netted when we realised that the big salmon i had been playing for the last half hour was infact a white plastic fertilise bag half full of tattie gutted or what.
Isaac is has been gone for a number of years but alway spoke of that night of the strangest catch we were ever likely to have.

what's yours ?

One of my mates had a long and interesting tussle one day with what eventuall turned out to be a large fishing brolly, hooked at the "handle" end so everytime he applied pressure it opened up to resist his efforts.

About 15 years ago a friend of mine caught a pack of sausages spinning for sea trout at the mouth of the River Inver just off the wall behind the Petrol station/Coop Car Park in Lochinver!I once had a freshwater mollusc clamped around a fly. It must have been open and the fly landed on it prompting it to close.

A friend once battled a skate in a strong tidal run for over 30mins, seeing the beast below the boat a couple of times before eventually landing a gaping salmon feed bag.

I'm not sure if the catch or the gear is the oddest in this pic!

and I know i've posted this one before but it was on the fly.....

Up at The Crask once I lassoed  a meadow pipit on The Tirry.  It was on the backcast. The leader must have hit it,  the heavy bead head nymph swung round like a bolas and the leader twisted round the unfortunate pipit. I simply unwound it and it flew off. No hooks involved. In retrospect it's probably one of the most interesting things that has ever happened there.

Spinning from a stone pier my brother hooked a duck, he brought the duck in and then went down the stone steps to release it from the spinner.  To make the job easier he held the duck beteewn his knees so that he could use both hands.  He said out loud " if ye hold still I'll be quick"!  I still wonder to this day what the couple who had just arrived thought when they saw him with duck between his legs and hearing that!!

C&R at a distance ...... but was fishing for mackerel in the mouth of the Gairloch. Reeling in a line full when a Bonxie appeared and latched on to one of the mackerel. It was only a light rod so I was pretty happy when it got the fish of the hook and flew way.

A few years ago whilst out stockie bashing I caught a bat, I put the rod down and was working my way along the line to free it when it managed to escape of its own volition, thank christ, I was having visions of rabies.

On the same night I caught a 'bow' on a fag end, my flea had fallen to bits and my mate dropped a fag end in the water which was promptly attacked, so I stuck the butt of the fag I was smoking on the ruined flea and had a fish first cast.

One day whilst fishing for mackerel off a pier a sea gull, with impeccable timing, managed to fly into my line mid cast.  After a good ten minute fight I managed to land it, then came the painful process of releasing the bugger.

Hooked a pilot whale while sea-trout fishing on the Danish coast from a belly boat.  It broke me after taking all the line and backing and towing me a short distance before the leader gave way. I very nearly had a "personal accident" (which would have required changing my waders),  when it came up near the belly boat. It was almost certainly foul hooked somewhere and didn't even notice.

The successful pattern was a Juletrae  ( Danish for "Christmas Tree") that's the fly in the middle below;

(http://img809.imageshack.us/img809/402/shrimps1saltfly7.jpg) (http://img809.imageshack.us/i/shrimps1saltfly7.jpg/)

not sure how reliable this is for pilot whales as I have never gotten close enough for a cast since.

Fishing for mackerel from the rocks at rhobodach? On Bute
Mate accidentally hooked a young basking shark......reel emptied in seconds with smoke billowing from it, then the rod broke in smithereens along with the reel.....pissed ourselves for ages after watching that...the look on his face was priceless.

Once hooked a landing net in a pool on the Oich, got it in, then fell over a brand new gaff in the grassy banking.....result !

The strangest recently was from the Tay......I actually caught a Salmon !!! ( too many duck eggs )

Strangest catch for me is catching a rainbow trout where none have been stocked, in a small river system connected to the sea, done it twice once in the Glenarm river N.Ireland and the second time in Skye Loch na Sguabaidh :?

The wife managed to hit a seal with her spinner off the Dornie corners, only Lynne could manage something like that given the fact I'm normally just happy to see the spinner go in the direction of the sea, what an unlucky seal

Had an eel on the fly once, thought I'd hooked a monster.
When trolling spotted a family of otters on the shore. Stopped the engine and went for the camera, leaving a floating rapala out the back of the boat which drifted into the bay where the otters were splashing about. The biggest otter spotted it and dived in. I was absolutely terrified that it would take the lure and did not dare reel in. My mate was smarter and slapped the water with an oar. The otter came up just short of the lure and after we did a little shouting and splashing disappeared.

Seal from Oban Pier whilst fishing for Congers - the toursists were well impressed with the fight - untill he popped his head up about 20 yards out with my hook in his jaw! Also Also had some very exciting follows from Sharks in Thailand - they shot up to the spinner from out of nowhere and then just stopped dead at the bait and never took ie. Also they only did this with a particular spinner - one with a faily big rubber fish on it - must be the vibrations of the rubber fish I guess.

Last year I had a continuous battle with some thing cutting through my leader at Anglers crag Ennerdale. I finally put a pike trace on and used a big yellow and silver doctor fly to have on the end a terrapin only lasted a few seconds before it snapped through the trace. Havn't seen it this year.

Middle of July this year I went to watendlath  tarn stockie bashing a mallard flew into the middle of the tarn when my friend said I could do with duck for tea just casting out done a double haul (wasn't even aiming for this bird) my line lassoed around the bloody duck put up a good fight and flew into my other friends boat and snapped off.

Out mackerel fishing off the fife coast and hooked a couple.  Just then, seal came up and followed them in.  Was a race to see if I could reel in faster than he could swim. I lost and he caught one of my mackerel and off he went.  Had to clamp my reel to snap the line.

10 minutes later. It happened to my mate!

Fishing for pollock with a rubber eel, a cormorant managed to attach itself to the hook. First and only time I have had to play anything in mid air. After landing the bird it proceeded to spit oily fish gunk all over me as I tried to unhook it. Thankfully no-one was harmed and we both went our seperate ways.

On my father-in-law's stream (they are farmers) I was dry fly fishing for the brownies and chubb. I was trying to get a long line up one pool because of the lack of access further up due to the steep bank and my forward cast stopped dead. Then all hell broke loose. I turned around ot see one of the heifers bucking around and charging off, emptying my little reel with me in hot pursuit. I managed to hold tight and break the 3lb Maxima.  I've done the same with the dog before too. She didn't make quite so much fuss.

Had I great laugh reading through these .
I have been broken by a White goat hooked on the back cast while fishing the Derbyshire Wye many years ago .
Ive also had several bats over the years but thankfully as I hate them, but all but 1 have released themselves .

The strangest incident is when I "lassoed" an 11" brownie , I hooked a fish that fought like something huge on eventually landing it it was an 11" fish that had fought like something many times larger . When unhooking, the line was under the hook barb and the loop this formed was around the "wrist" of the fish just before the tail !

The funniest was when coarse fishing in my teens on a wide piece of river ledgering I cast out my rig with about 6 maggots on the hook and was waiting for the splash as the bait landed by the far bank only to discover that I had hooked my mate in the eye lid ! We cut the line leaving the hook in and went to the local A & E still with all the maggots on ! The nurse wouldn't touch the hook before I removed the maggots.
