Those Bergens look a lot more comfortable than the awful pear shaped thing I used to hump about in the Paras in the mid 70s. Having said that I am not into the military look. No camo or khaki for me thanks.

I could do with a 100ltr sack for backpacking, think I'll  get one while they are that price.

That's actually pretty light for a 100 ltr heavy duty bag Sandy. My old 65ltr Karrimor, a great sack, weighs the same empty.

we only needed our webbing. we weren't expected to survive long enough to need anything else. besides which, we could always rely on the paras to be coming up behind with their huge bergens  (IV RGJ)

Quickest marching regiment in the army wasn't it 160 bpm?

When doing the jump scenes for 'A Bridge Too Far' Attenborough kept 'C' company of which I was a very lowly member in beer for a fortnight. He could not believe how much beer we could get through and still be on parade the next morning for filming. And yes we sometimes kept beer in our Bergens"

It's a different world now it started to decline before I left in 2012 they are taking lads weekends off them if they smell alcohol on their breath on morning parade.

By the way My Vulcan came this morning the quality is far far superior to your bog standard british issue which was based on the Vulcan.

Mine is due on Tuesday. I was in the market  for a new day pack anyway and the feature of converting the side pockets into a day pack sold it to me. I sometimes carry a separate day pack when hiking into  some wild camp to use from base, now I won't have to do that. Two bags for the price of one and much reduced price into the bargain.

Thanks for the heads up - great call.  :8)

You will be the first person I've ever seen actually use it as a day pack but it's a good nice to have. Like your self I would carry a small day sack rolled up in the main co payment it's self and use it when needed. As the side pouched were usually full.

Being no spring chicken this could be my last sack.

The old 65 ltr Karrimor is still in good nick if a bit grubby and will be used for sea fishing etc. I'd expect the Vulcan will outlast me if it's as good as you guys say.

The legs and lungs, while not quite those of a 25 year old, are still strong with no sign of buckling just yet, but won't last for ever. I put it down to all the fgs I didn't smoke and all the pints I never drank. ***  :8)

I had considered buying one in the past, but the price put me off. At around £100 I have bitten the bullet :)

What's wrong with a gentle stroll up the Tekapo from Lake Benmore, catch 1/2 dozen 3lb+ fish on dries then back to The Birstro by  7.30PM for Monteiths Black and dual lamb shank?    :8)

All sounds good, but I'm still digesting that outsize lamb. Maybe just a single shank this time...

My rucksack arrived yesterday and I have now had the chance to have a real look at it.

A very well made and practical bit of kit, not light at 2.78 KG, but for a solid 100 ltr bag that's not bad. I weighed my old 65 ltr Karrimor and it is 2.08 kg (not 2.5 as I thought).

So using a direct comparison of kg per ltr of capacity the Berghaus is better.

Karrimor 65 ltr:  0.032 kg / ltr
Beghaus 100 ltr:  0.028 kg / ltr

I think this 'sack will outlast me.    :D

Fred would this sack take a float tube?
Title: Re: Heads up on a good deal for a Bergen for life.
Post by: Wildfisher on August 18, 2015, 12:57:59 PM
I think it would Robbie, the upper and lower compartments can be used combined as one.

IMO it's a bit of an overkill if it's just for carrying a float tube. A cheap bag would do that just as well. I have a 30 quid bag I use for that.  :D

The Bergen pack looks like a quality bit of kit but for carrying a float tube, Chesties, flippers etc , I reckon you would find this (below link) very useful. They are very well made, 100 % waterproof, very roomy for ease of access and they are fitted with excellent padded shoulder straps. The biggest is a huge 125 L and it will carry more than most of us could lift ! it only costs £40 . A lot cheaper than the Bergen and far better for Tube etc. I've owned one and can recommend it.

I figured that my rucksack will be heaviest when I talk the float tube and that this is when I'd get most benefit from a decent pack. Guess I assumed that a better quality pack would be more comfortable and better for carrying heavy loads over longer distances.

I've got to admit this is one of the reasons I bought the bergen was to get to the tarns alot easier with compartments with spare kit too.

You have also to consider weight. The bergen is significantly heavier than an ordinary rucksack. I am very impressed with mine but will still use my lighter sack most of the time.

At my age that doesn't bother me luckily especially after a few years of constantly carrying weight usually around 30 to 40kg wile on tour including body armour it came to 7st.

It's nice to be a civvy and carrying just civilian comfort stuff only brings it up to around 20kg

Well Bergen is packed for next weekend in some lowland moors and woodland ive packed it for comfort and not for distance and currently stands at 17.6KG not including my food nor dog food but is packed with water.  Luxury stuff includes a 4 man tent, axe, saw, 2 fishing rods (fly kit and spinning kit) sniper matt, 2ltr kettle, jet boil and other random home comforts.

Tent takes up a lot of weight as its a big 4 man but I am carrying alsorts I wont Be traveling miles so I've took quite a it of home comforts tools add some weight too. When doing longer trips I'd carry far less weight.

A chap in club has done all the Munros, plus all the Corbetts, plus all the Grahams. We were having a chat on Harris a few weeks ago and I asked him what he reckoned was a good one man tent, expecting him to say a Hilleberg Akto." Straight off he said " The best one man tent you can get is a best lightweight two man tent because you will always need the room".

My Terra Nova  Laser Competition   is one man, but it is much roomier than most.   http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/tents-and-spares/all-tents/laser-competition-1-tent/ (http://www.terra-nova.co.uk/tents-and-spares/all-tents/laser-competition-1-tent/)

Being a side entry tent the porch area is huge. It's very light in the spec well under 1 KG, but that's a con. The titanium pegs are tiny, easy to lose and  next to useless. I would NOT trust them to hold the tent in strong wind. I replaced them with solid aluminum plus I carry a few spares  which knocks the packed tent weight up to 1.3 KG. To be honest it's a backpacking tent, not a mountain tent.

The time of year is coming up for checking on FleaBay for secondhand tents. I got a good Hilleberg not long ago and always worth keeping an eye open. Most folks nearly always take a bit of care with their tents because they want to keep dry, and any decent tent is one that was probably chosen with a bit of care in the first place. Good tents come along because of knackered knees and getting a young family started, and so on, and so on.
