How would you make a diving fly

The river was very very fast this morning. So much so that I put on a fast sink line a leadcored braided tippet and a size 6 heavily leaded fly. despite all that the fly barely got down 6 inches. I can assure you casting that lot isn't the easiest thing to do. Which got me thinking. There must be a way of using the current like the spinning people do with their vaned rapalas etc to construct a fly that dived deeper the faster the water flowed over it. Any ideas?

Had a thought about using one of these to produce the diving "lip" used on many lures.

Available in a number of small sizes.
Strip off the insulation and widen the crimping slot that is revealed with a file. File off the shoulders, fill the hole with a drop of epoxy and file the lip to the desired shape and bend to the desired angle. Crimp onto the hook shank just behind the eye and tie up the rest of the fly as normal.
'til a voice as bad as conscience,
rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."

Now Kenneth, THAT is a smart idea!  :8)

Good ideas there - I will get some of those connecters. Also I knew somewhere at the back of my mind about the Dahlberg Diver. Thanks for the memory jog Sandy. Superscot - believe me the end tackle is already way beyond split shot weight! The fly alone is a size 6 double with 2 layers of lead.
