When the signal goes at least the map stays so if you can remember which direction it was pointing you in you can still sort of use it

That's why I always say GPS  only compliments map and compass, it does not replace them or basic navigational skills

Part-time

Only caution I'd have using maps on a phone/tablet would be lack of waterproofing; most of the purpose built GPS's are pretty waterproof.

That said a lot of people are now using tablets/phones for mapping and surveying with digital maps due to the better screen quality and convenience.

Yes John you are correct. Getting the phone wet is not a great idea. Once running the route slipping it into  some kind of waterproof holder will be essential  if the weather is wet.

I get update emails from Anquet and they now do their maps on Android.

I like them on the computer but don't know how they work on mobiles.
Don't worry, be happy.

Hi
I use Tracky.

You can use various different types of maps , OS, bing, MapQuest  etc. or download  a UK map for use when there is no signal.

Its got loads of nice features like compass and route track, and the trial version is free  :D
