I own and regularly use three US made automatic fly reels, a Heddon, a Southbend and a Perrine. When I'm fishing a run or pool, I can cast with these reels, adjust the line length with my little pinky and virtually fish one handed until I move on to the next situation. Reeling in is just a quick flip not "ziz,ziz,ziz----'. I still use conventional reels but find the auto type reels very satisfactory when used within their limitations. Like Alan, I do find myself reaching for the winding lever that isn't there when I use a clicker type reel! Auto fly reels never caught on in Australia. I occasionally see references to them in old fishing books but not often. I think that fly fishing conservatism may have had alot to do with this. I'd like to try one of the more modern auto reels but I'm afraid they are well out of my price range.
Cheers,
Steve.
