What can you  tell me about them?

I am thinking about getting a David Norwich rod, either having one made or buying from his existing range.  I have not found a rod that comes close to my Sage ZXL for feel and 'delightfulness'  to use and would like to get something similar if possible. I'd far rather support a Scottish craftsman  /  business than buy foreign again - but only if the rod is as good. What do you think?

I have two but they are old & by that I mean fibre glass & split cane.
What I will say though is that going by past experience & by reading reviews over the years his "modern" rods are well received. He will build you one to order to suit your requirements.
You would not go far wrong dealing with him. When I got mine made he had a wee place up the stairs from an alley in Queen St Glasgow so it was that long ago. I believe he is located somewhere in the borders. I have seen some of his work since then & the finish is superb. Believe is was called EV something or other, I had a cast or two & it was a dream to use. much like a good Winston/Sage though far better finish.
I stand to be corrected but I believe he makes his own blanks. He certainly made his split cane rods from scratch. One he called Cane Spirit with a swelled butt a style much favoured by American rod builders was a joy to behold.
My split cane was a refurbish Sharpes but he finished it superbly. I still have it but far too heavy now for me to use.

Why do you need a new rod if you are happy with the current one?

Agreed- the correct formula for the optimum number of fishing rods is:

(number of rods you already own) + 1

Yes, that equation works well for me.

I'd like another rod that performs roughly the same as the Sage ZXL but a line weight down.

I know it's a name you won't come across much, but I can't sing his praises enough- GATTI rods for me all the way :)

Correct rod number is from the formula where in -
Rods you already own =X
Rods you would like to own=Y
Rods you can afford = Z
Cash available= A
Rod price = B

Y>X is the truth, however X<Z also holds true as does B>A.
Thus (B-A)<(Y-X) should hold true.
The key is the determinant in statement 2 above - " would like".
This obviates all logic and is (falsely) replace by the term "need"
Wherein Y<X, however Z=A may not hold true, thus you fanny about asking spurious questions on forums until you are convinced that B=Z and Y<X.  That B>A is irrelevant as is Y>X>
'til a voice as bad as conscience,
rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."
