Hello All.I am always looking for the holly grail of fly floatants. I do a lot of skated fly presentation in the summer evenings & go through loads of fumed silica. This ancient Bergman formula should help floating them high.I used a paraffin wax & panel wipe mixture. The panel wipe evaporated almost instantly & the fly doesn't seem to leave a slick.Looks better than any commercial floatant i have ever bought.

It can even float a bare hook.(looks interesting) :D

Sure it is mentioned in his book Trout. A google search should throw up something. This kind of thing has been around for ages. Sorry  homemade  floatants.

Basically you mix lighter fuel with paraffin wax for candle making.(about 8 parts fuel to 1 or 2 parts wax) I have used panel degreaser as its clear without various additives that's in Colemans fuel ect. I tried panel degreaser with red mucilin first & it's good but the candle wax looks better. When you blow on the fly the fuel is more or less gone.I am not that worried about bursting into flames as i don't smoke either.Cheers All
