I've been browsing through a few catalogues looking for a new pair of waterproof trousers mainly for a wee bit of river bank fishing but mainly for boat fishing and the hill lochs. There seems to be so much variety out there now I'd just like to ask everyones opinion of the best ones to go for. I'd like something hard wearing as heather and bracken just rip up the cheap ones. I'd rather spend some money for a good pair than keep getting trench arse everytime I go out. Anyone got any favourites?

Cheers,

TC.

If you don't mind camo how about army surplus. Breathable Gortex can be heavy though if you are carrying them any distance.

Thought the suggestion on another thread of using cut of breathable waders a good idea, useful use of the old waders and saves on the pounds - ideal for the boat and river - won't matter when they get ricked as they cost nothing that wasn't ready for the scrap heap anyway. Can't remember who sugested it but it was a five star tip.

Catbadger,

FWIW I never found anything would keep me really dry in a downpour on a boat - even goretex. Until a friend gave me a pair of cheap PVC and these work better than anything I've tried on cool wet days. They're hopeless for anything requiring a bit of effort as they absolutely do not breathe! If the weather is in any way warm they come off as soon as it's stopped raining.

I've also got a pair of "just in case"  regatta trousers that are ok for anything but a downpour, very cheap and light.

I confess to a middle course for the hill lochs using single ventile trousers for nearly everything - therefore I don't usually take waterproof trousers with me. They're expensive, very very tough, water resistant but not completely waterproof - I wouldn't sit on a wet riverbank.

Yeah I've got some Army Surplus Gore-tex trousers, ?6.00 from E-Bay (result !) and they are excellent, have been thoroughly wet on mnay occsions and the water has never got through to the skin. Fine to walk in as well.

The only thing is looking like an American gun fanatic !
