Best bit of advice..... start saving up to get morse controls instead   :)

We used to have a boat with pulley steering and it can be a real pain. You've probably already done it but here are a few things to check for:

All pulleys and idlers turning freely and no damage to edges which can trap cable.
Cable isn't frayed and causing sticking. A cracked plastic cover can do the same.
Cable tension is OK. Too slack=slipping. Does it have spring tensioners in it that can be adjusted?
Correct number of turns round drive pulley from boats wheel. Too few means cable can slip (Think of it like extra turns round a capstan to take more strain)
Anything fouling the cable where it runs under the gunwale or through a bulkhead?

There's probably plenty more but this might give you something to go on.

PS - Did I mention saving up for morse controls  :makefun

Better of using an outboard mounted on the transom and a tiller extension imo.
Let them go.

rang interminable changes,
on an everlasting whisper,
day and night repeated so-
"Something hidden, go and find it,
Go and look beyond the ranges,
Something lost beyond the ranges,
Lost and waiting for you,
Go."
