I had one of these myself. it is a nice looking and well made reel, but mine wasn't free running enough for my liking, so I got rid of it.

Line guards can be useful in a crosswind as they stop the line from being blown off the spool like line peeling off a fixed spool reel. My current reels (Alcocks Match aerial and Okuma Aventa Pro) don't have lineguards and I've got used to this. People who use the Wallis cast (I don't, but I do something like it) say that a line guard interferes with the cast.
Protect the edge.
