For the sake of accuracy, original birds and feathers have been listed here. Many of these birds are now rare and/or protected. Please check your local regulations before you use anything like this. Even possession of many feathers is illegal in lots of places.This applies even if you find them dead on the road etc. Also, for most things relatively common substitutes may be found. No feathers have "magical" properties, they were often chosen simply because they were available, and the colour and texture looked right.

Interesting stuff, I notice Merlin on the list. Can anyone give a fly pattern using Merlin feathers and is possession of protected species feathers in the U.K. illegal if you come across the feathers by accident ?

Quite a few old flies used Merlin. I have added the relevant info. I believe the possession of such feathers is illegal in a lot of places, including the UK.
Here is one;
21. Dark Watchett (Iron Blue Dun):
Hook: 00 (#16)
Hackle: feather from back of Merlin hawk
Body: orange and purple silk twisted with a little mole's fur
Head: orange silk
Note: a very small fly bit a favorite on cold blustery days
It is from Lister; http://www.wildfisher.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=16876.0 (http://www.wildfisher.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=16876.0)
But there are a number of others.
