Saw a strange thing tonight on the way home from work. Looked like 100s of seagulls circling high in the sky but every now & again they darted off line just like swifts do.
I guess they were feeding on something but what & at that height what might it be. I though something like flying ants that "fledge" en masse. Any you guys throw any light on this one.

aye the ants were out last night in Edinburgh and the gulls were swarming to eat them.
It's the flying ants heading off to find new places to nest, mostlky blackheaded gulls that eat them.

PS - it's funny how it happens on the same night across the country :?

Thanks guys I thought that & they did appear to be Black Headed Gulls.
