I use that nearly every day, a fantastic product. I can't believe it is free. I just wish I could seamlessly join it up with GIMP - if that was an option it would be the ultimate vector graphics and image editing program. Even if there were some way that they could use the same file format.

They can use the same format ( with a few tricks);

You can also import .svg paths into Blender, tho I have never done it with Gimp paths, I have done it with Inkscape ones.   One of the really interesting things is to scan artwork, load the bitmap into Inkscape, and then run the "trace bitmap" feature on it.  This gives you an .svg version of the bitmap.  You then go in and clean up any extraneous control nodes, maybe reshape a few curves to neaten things up, then you can import the result into the 3D app of your choice.

work is being done on this by both teams.

There are some scripts that work well too;

http://www.gimphelp.org/svgpage.shtml (http://www.gimphelp.org/svgpage.shtml) ( only works on Linux I think)

There are plenty of converters for the file formats available. This should work with Windows ( I have only tried it on Linux);

It's the best free software for Scalable Vector Graphics on Windows.  ( Xara is only free for Linux).

Well, the windows version I downloaded did not even have a standard windows  installer. I really  could  not be bothered installing it with a shell script. If this is ever going to  used more widely  they will have to get that sorted out.

Thanks Mike, that's much better. I think I'll need some tutorials to learn this software.

Fred,

Help > Inkscape Manual > quick start

This takes you through a few examples

The problem with all software is getting to know it well - it can take months in some cases. This is no exception, having said that you can make simple graphics within hours or even minutes depending on your background.

The basics are included in the software;

There are many more tutorials available, but those are adequate to get started.
