Title: Lightweight Backpacking Cook Gear
Post by: Wildfisher on August 21, 2015, 02:27:13 PM
I'm not looking for a multiple piece set, one pot, maybe two with a lid that is usable as a plate is enough. Preferably with a net bag to contain it and built in fold away handles.

Something about 0.75 to 1ltr capacity would be enough.

I'm not looking for the cheapest I'm prepared to pay a reasonable amount for something that is light, durable and that works.

Any recommendations?

have a look at GSI, Fred:

uk distributor has just changed to Lyon (from Rosker)

basecamp or back of truck-wise, this is very much an object of desire:

Fred,
Look at my "Bargain Camping Pots" posting on July 23rd. Got from Tesco in Stirling. Excellent value :D :D

alocs titanium pot. Lid makes a plate or a frying pan. Handles fold back , I've had mine about 2years and its still in good nik. Cost about £45 / £50 but its light and tough.

I tend to use a jet boil or a kettle I don't usually tend to cook more than noodles and boiled eggs though

What do you want a plate for? :)

All I use is a 1 Litre aluminium pot, in fact it might be 1½ Litres, from an old set I have and a Trangia kettle and aluminium pot grip. The pot fits over the end of my rolled up tent so doesn't take up any room and the kettle gets packed with small items and slips in between everything else, the pot grab is used to hold the hot pot while eating out of it :) The water is boiled in the kettle and everything is made in the pot leaving enough in the kettle for a hot drink and a little for keeping the food residue in the pot, after eating, moist for cleaning.

Fred, Have a look at the set from Tesco. Only £8 at the Tesco Online and they are great value!!  It is called a Yellowstone 5 Piece Camping Cook Set. Looks like what you need. I have tried to put a link but my Firefox refuses to play today. Is this a result of Windows10 I wonder ?????

The sizes given for volumes in the product description are quite wrong. The largest pot is about 7" across and the smaller is about 6.5 in diameter so they will not be holding 5.5 litres ! The pots are the usual sort of size.

That looks good, very lightweight. For all the times I actually use it, it would be fine. I'll check out my local tesco

Just got my set from the garage. The larger pot is 1.4ltr, the smaller one is 1.0ltr, the large lid is 7" across and smaller lid is 5.5" across and the fifth item is a gripper handle and there is a strap to keep the set together. Great value, not the thickest aluminium pots but they all only weigh about 260gms.

I have reserved one for collection at the local Tesco. For £8 you can't go wrong even if it only lasts a year or two. I'll only carry one pot + lid so it will be even lighter than 260g.

They are for sale on FleaBay for double that.

Have you got a link Fred? The one I'm looking at is £18 and £8 just for the kettle.

That is the link I was trying to post earlier. I dragged the link to my desktop from the Tesco page and opened a reply on the forum but could not then either drag it into my reply nor find it on the desktop when I tried to open the Browse bit for an attachment. The day before I had loaded up some BLue Shrimp pictures and all was OK. Today the Browse bit is closing my Firefox. I have no idea what is now wrong with things. Come to that I have never been able to post a link !! I must be a right numpty.

It works for me instantly - but I could not get it to go into an attempted posting of it earlier on.

I picked up my Yellowstone cook gear from Tesco today. Can't fault it. Very lightweight, well made  and practical. Good call Vaughan.  :8)

Looks like the set I bought forty years ago, lighter though. I use the small pot and the pot grip to this day :)

The pot grip is a really good idea. With cheap pots fixed fold away handles can come adrift. These pots have no appendages, they are simple pressed alloy. Nothing to go wrong, no non stick coating  to get damaged. Scour them with a handful of loch gravel if you like!

At £8 there is nothign to lose. Like you Sandy I have a similar set that dates back to the '70s  even has a kettle. Still perfectly serviceable, but a bit too heavy and bulky.

Probably the same set Fred, mine had a kettle too. I only use the small pot, and the grip to hold it while I eat out of it. The kettle I replaced with the Trangia one which is smaller and lighter. As I said, it is wide enough to go over the end of my rolled up tent so doesn't take up all that much space :)

Both the pot and the kettle are 138 grams each.
