Title: Tube fly doubles?
Post by: caorach on April 18, 2022, 06:36:31 PM
Can anyone recommend a decent double hook for tube flies?

I was recommended Owner doubles but found that when I hooked a rock these straightened with almost no effort at all, handy enough for getting the fly back but less than ideal when it comes to landing a fish. Now my fish will never be big but even so a bit of confidence helps.

I am using Ahrex tube doubles now that Salars are like hens teeth.
Scandis use them and they catch some fair lumps on them.
You have to be careful with Owner hooks. Some snap, some are like toffee but some are very good.

Hi Philip,

You could try Fulling Mill FM-7171 (Black Nickel) or FM-7175 (Silver).  They are good strong hooks and are a bit cheaper than the Ahrex hooks.  I wouldn't go past either of these.

Thanks for the replies, I might give a few of both the Fulling Mill and the Ahrex ones a try and see how they work for me, probably come from the same factory anyhow.

I don't fish a tube very often so it isn't really a big deal but it means that I've no experience of what works other than that the Owner hooks didn't really inspire confidence in me.
