Got hit by this last night.

Not on any dodgy sites either :makefun

It is a real nasty, or can be. I was lucky and it didn't encrypt any files but getting rid of it took all today. I used the advice in the link below. I only needed to do the first part.

I have Spybot and Microsoft Essentials both up to date and running and it still got through. I shut down the computer immediately and disconnected it from the network. I ran a scan with both these and Malwarebytes in safe mode and they found nothing. I restarted and it was still there. Eventually I ran the Malwarebytes Chameleon program and it cleared it. Luckily it seems it was only the flash screen I got but it is a real threat.

There are a couple of such "police" viruses, and also a couple of "DNS changer" trojans which are not detected by the majority of anti-malware  This is getting worse all the time.

The only real solution to some of this is to go over to Linux.  I now use Linux on all my machines, Windows is just too much trouble.

I've only been hit by two or three viruses in the last twenty years online and all were caught before infecting the computer, but this one was a shock

I thought the Red Devil one my son-in-law got on their laptop was bad but this is much worse.

I have never had a virus on any of my personal machines, not least because I was always ultra-careful and took what some might consider fairly extreme precautions, but I have seen hundreds hit by them, even when taking such precautions and not when doing anything "dodgy" either.  There are just too many criminals and nutcases targeting Microsoft, and some of them are very clever indeed.

As things stand you are vulnerable as soon as you start surfing, precautions notwithstanding.  The time and effort required to do this is now too much in relation to the usefulness in my opinion.  As yet , there are no known viruses for Linux.  Just saves a lot of time and effort, apart from actually working better than Windows anyway.  The fact that it is free is of course an added bonus, but it's not why I changed, those reasons are outlined above.
