How far is it worth going with this drive towards lightweight gear? 

For example I have been thinking about buying a titanium mug - would be about £18 and weights 60g. My current stainless steel mug is about double that weight. Is it worth it?

Do these small weight savings add up to a worthwhile extent?

I use a plastic mug which came with a picnic set we bought about thirty years ago 

It is surprising just how much weight is saved by shaving the odd gram here and there by getting lighter gear.

It would be cheaper to lighten your stainless mug by drilling a few holes in it.

I see at least one  major drawback with that    :lol:

It's simple really, you take your son with you and as they are always last out of their beds in the morning you slip most of your stuff in the bottom of their rucksack, sorted.

I just had a look and my plastic mug weighs 54gms, 6gms less than the titanium one and wont scald my lips when drinking hot liquid from it

I used to use plastic, but changed to stainless steel because whisky tasted better out of it. Now that I no longer go camping with alcoholics I never drink, so that's not an issue.  :lol: I may revert to the plastic mug. £18 for a metal mug is ridiculous.

Plenty folk drill out as much as makes sense from their fork and spoon handles and some even to the extent of taking a side prong off from a fork. Nowadays the plastic Spork has taken over. There are some very time consuming American lightweight camping and climbing gear sites. It is all a bit like saving a few more grams from your roadbike. One chap I know even spent £80 to replace his already high spec wheelhub spindles with ones weighing just a bit less !!
