Title: Mayfly on Sutherland Lochs.
Post by: Brook on April 02, 2017, 10:03:58 AM
Hi all, We've got a few days fishing booked for mid June up in Sutherland.
I've read there might be a chance of a good Mayfly hatch.
What patterns and methods are best?
Any experiences would be much appreciated.
Kev.

Thanks Andy, yes, we may be a bit early, 10th, 11th and 12th but could get lucky??
100 fish in a big hatch must be some experience.
The only time we came across Mayflies was a evening fall of spinners on Ullswater.
Spent Mayfly were everywhere in a flat calm with Trout rising right across the lake.
I put on a Deerstalker dry, which looked identical to the real spinners, an hour and a half later ,as it went dark, I'd not had a touch. looking back I think they were feeding on Buzzers.

I have frequently seen some good hatches of Mayfly on Cam Loch in June. Deer hair emergers were very effective.

Best time for mayfly on Sutherland Lochs is usually Wimbledon Fortnight but it's all down to weather.

That is true, before then the hatches can be a bit sporadic.

Thanks for the replys.
Isn't it always torrential rain for the Wimbledon fortnight?
Last time I was up north, late May, there were good hatches of Olives with the odd Mayfly.
Is it warm weather that gets them hatching?

In Sutherland the 25 weeks prior to Wimbledon fortnight and the 25 weeks after are also noted for torrential rain. And gales!    :D

And sometimes even during the Wimbledon fortnight.
