Not a gamer but I think what you need is a good graphic card & processor at least.

Is it a PC which he can use for other things or would he rather have an Xbox or similar?

I think you need something like I got last year for video processing. I7 Quad core, 64 bit, 16GB memory plus a super fast video card. Take  a look at Novatech for some ideas

you'll be talking around a  grand

Get a copy of Custom PC too as there is a lot of information in that. It is a specialised computing mag and there is usually a load of advertisers with gaming machines.

for gaming you are best with I5 quad core CPU , as there is very little diff in the way of I5 and I7 when it comes to gaming.

For a gaming pc you need a big power supply , the one i have is 600watts currently .

This is my gaming PC which i built my self

Windows home premium 64bit
8 GB 1333MHz DDR3 gaming memory
600 watt PSU
64 GB SSD for windows and 1 or 2 games
i 5 -2400 3.10 GHz
after market Arctic 7 freezer pro rev 2 cpu cooler
GTX 460 SC ( super clocked ) graphics which is DDR5 memory 1GB i have also removed the stock cooler it came with and i have an Arctic Accelero twin turbo 2 cooler
232 GB HDD for all other games , pictures , music etc.

But to keep ahead of the games for PC you really need to invest in a serious graphics card , a lot of new games coming out are so graphics intense that you will need to SLI 2 graphics together .

I am looking at upgrading my graphics card already , but waiting nearer xmas / next year for the price to come down a bit.
as i hope to upgrade to the NVIDIA GTX 780 3GB DRR5 which is £550 almost. but the next card up is the TITAN range which are hitting £800 - £1500 price range lol.

Not a lot of difference between the 780 and the 670 James.

and the 670 is below £300

By the time you run out of power with that the Titan will be down in price :)

For a twelve year old, it's a very cheap matter. I am in IT myself, and I build gaming PCs for myself and on a hobby basis, for friends -

You can take my word for it if I say about £400, if you're buying everything new. The real deciders when it comes to the PC's performance (at the level we're talking about here, anyway) are the graphics card and the CPU, or processor.

I'd spend about £70 on a graphics card (I'd personally recommend an AMD Radeon HD7750), maybe £80 on a processor (an AMD A8 or something would do you well) and the rest is just gravy, really.

If you'd like me to send you a proper list of parts (and where to get them the cheapest), PM me and I'll happily sort you out.
