Often used dyed blue as a substitute for blue barred jay primary coverts, but not as good. Used extensively on salmon flies as a front hackle, also dyed blue and other colours. Some small fly patterns specify tails of natural or dyed guinea fowl. A small packet of feathers suffices for the soft hackle dresser, and only if he wishes to dress such flies of course! For coloured fibres, use marker.
The feathers from the Vulturine Guinea Fowl were used on one of Ransome's sea trout patterns "Ransome's Elver"

the feathers are difficult and expensive to obtain.
