Title: Clyde Style flies - J Reid
Post by: Malcolm on April 04, 2010, 12:44:00 AM
Alex (hares ear) lent me this book last week which is quite wonderful. I've read it cover to cover and have been astonished at the flies and tactics described therein. The flies look so deliccate - most of the wets are representive of flies which have been caught and are tumbling down the river and they look very realistic indeed. I've already tied quite a few. However some of the techniques involed I had thought were invented by reservoir fishers were around a long time ago. Stretched polythene over the body for translucence for one.

I had always thought that clyde style meant these delicate wets - but not so. There are dry dun patterns, dry spent spinner patterns and a selection of nymphs.

In the book he also describes how people used these very delicate patterns to great effect on on the lochs in flat calms. A technique that I personally am very fond of although I tend to use spiders and dries in these conditions. I had always thought this was a fairly modern innovation but clearly not.

Excellent book.

Thanks Alex!

Sounds like an interesting read Malcolm.  Is this the one http://www.anglebooks.com/product.php/21498/clyde-style-flies-and-their-dressings--with-some-hints-on-their-use-

SWMBO would kill me if I paid that for a book. :D

The clyde really does have a great tradition for fly tying. They even had tyings for mature and immuture nymphs which was ahead of its time..

One book I would like to get is lets fish the clyde again by bert sharpe? Anybody got any ideas how I could get a copy without having to raid the bank?

cheers

Davy,

If you ever come across a spare copy let me know. ( Wishful thinking I know).  If you don't mind me asking what does Bert cover in the 2nd book?

Just to make you sick - I got the J Reid book as a freebie with a subscription to FF&FT a couple of years ago!

It is the 1971 printing.

I was one of the dafties that paid big bucks for a first edition just about 6 months before the reprint came out despite making enquiries to the publishers to see if that was ever going to be the case.
Having said that a first edition is still worth about ?100 even today.
My Bert Sharp book on the other hand I got on E Bay for less than ?20 & would you believe it is a signed copy & dedicated to a person that is mentioned in the book so how it ended up on E bay is a bit of a mystery. I have been offered over ?100 for that one. Lets Fish again is the one I am missing, but one day it will join my other treasured reads.
Scottish Trout Flies.... W. H. Lawrie (First Edition)
The Practical Angler......Stewart (Not first edition but old 1927)

Here are a couple of my Clyde Flies for those that are not aware

Well after many years of search and with the help of Scotty ansd East Wind I can now say I have a copy of Let's Fish Again. Some of the material is a repeat of various passages in Lets Fish the Clyde but a good read nonetheless. Thats me now got all three although the J reid is not a first edition.
